Stages in roughing out the iklwa blade. First off the tang needs to be tough enough to hang a 400# lion on. This is suminigashi core with low-layer vertical 1095/15n20 stack, fish-mouth welded. I grind it down and check the welds and get all the scale off. Test etch to see how the pattern looks. Pretty good. The symmetry of the fish mouth weld is not 100% perfect but perfection just offends the gods. The tang needs a bit of straightening and tweaking and its ready to quench. #iklwachallenge @reddragonforge

I am very excited to have Mert on the podcast this month, as he is one of the only custom knifemakers that comes from a professional background in cooking. He’s one of the founding members of the Wootz Society, and is also making his own crucible steel. He is a wealth of insight and information, and I hope you enjoy our conversation.

I’m excited to have ABS Master Smith Lin Rhea on the podcast this month. His innovative designs and masterful forging techniques have been an inspiring resource for me over the years. In this episode we discuss some of the specialty techniques that he uses for forging knives, like his X-Rhea knives, and more. Enjoy!

Coming from a background in bronze casting and sculpture, Don Carlos Andrade is the quintessential artist and maker. His aesthetics, style and quality of execution in performance of his knives are why I selected him to be a part of the Artisans of Steel calendar featuring culinary knife makers. He's a great guy, with a varied background, and I had a great time getting to know him better in our chat!
