We all tell ourselves a story. Every time we speak, we tell a story..... one lesson you can learn from the Bible creation story is, you can change your entire world in a matter of 7 days, beginning with just a word.

My grandfather was an ambitious man. Soldier. Warrior. Musician. Conductor. Composer. Businessman. Property owner. Head of the household. Family man. Brother. Husband. Father. Lover of Life. But after he died, Very little of his legacy lived on for not very long afterwards. I’ve watched men amass fortunes in my lifetime and lose it all when death denies their next breath. But what I’ve witnessed that does continue to live beyond their mortality is their duty. The passion they have for humanity ignites an eternal flame in a unique way for each generation inspired by their story of struggle and triumph. Tupac. Malik El hajj Shabazz. Muhammad Ali. Huey P Newton. Marcus Garvey. Bob Marley. All of them had a message for mankind to be smart and organize. They left us a blueprint for liberation. And they weren’t afraid to risk it all in order to obtain it. The only way we’ve come close to attaining it, is to act confidently without hesitation and boldly go where none have traversed before

Chicago-based artist Cody Norman’s exhibition, Becoming: Where Plastic Meets Nature, transformed discarded plastics into coral-like, organic sculptures that blurred the line between the synthetic and the natural.

Previously on view at #GarfieldParkConservatory, Norman’s work asks us to reconsider our relationship to plastic, not only as a pollutant, but as a material already embedded in our ecosystems, neighborhoods, and futures.

Through his practice and his work at Redemptive Plastics (@redemptive_plastics), Norman imagines reuse as a form of repair, adaptation, and possibility.

Most artists aren’t working one job. They’re building a livelihood across many. And yet, most of our systems are still designed as if work comes from a single, stable source.

There are models that point in a different direction. In Austin, for example, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) provides access to healthcare for working musicians—recognizing that creative work rarely comes with traditional benefits.

It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a darn good start.

And if this is the reality of the arts workforce, then access to benefits shouldn’t be the exception—it should be part of the design.

This begs the question: what would it look like for policy to build for this reality?

Designers all over the world are realizing the recycling bin is only the beginning of a product’s life. That’s because using our open-source tools, they’re able to turn plastic waste into raw materials for making joyful products the next generation can enjoy. 💚♻️🪀
