𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞

The 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, held in Kathmandu from 5–9 October, brought together researchers, conservation practitioners and experts to share knowledge and explore new approaches to red panda conservation. Organised by Red Panda Network in collaboration with Rotterdam Zoo, the AZA SAFE Red Panda Program and the IUCN SSC Small Carnivore Specialist Group, the symposium created a platform for exchanging research and conservation experiences across red panda range countries and the wider international conservation community.
Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN) contributed to this wider conversation through a paper presented by its Director.

On the second day, during the In Situ Conservation session, Sanjeevani Yonzon Shrestha, Director of Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN), presented her paper, “𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐀 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 – 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.”

Her presentation explored an essential question: how can environmental education move beyond imparting knowledge to unlock the agency needed for meaningful change?

💬 “A person who understands, ‘My choices affect the systems that affect my well-being,’ has the potential to become an agent of change.”

She emphasised that the ultimate goal is not simply a circular economy. It is a wholesome life within ecological limits.

We often talk about empowering children. But empowerment cannot happen in a vacuum. Children need adults who are willing to listen, share space for collective decision-making, create opportunities and sometimes simply get out of the way.

Environmental education is therefore not only about changing young minds. It is also about unlocking the minds of the adults who shape the systems in which young people live, learn, grow and BECOME.

🌱 We cannot unlock children's agency while keeping adult systems locked.

For WCN, this is a vital connection between nature conservation.
