Wonderful start to @montclairfilm with a first screening on Wednesday of Oracle of Delphi, Ohio, and a second happening tonight! Wonderful to see some of our amazing crew, including Noah Fowler (DP), Madeleine Joyce (AD), and Ayana Goore (PA)! We were part of a great shorts block that included @monkswhoknowball , Jimmy’s Corner: One More Round, @charlieandtherocketman, and About that Picasso. An added bonus was watching the amazing film - Free Joan Little - by @redrubes14 and seeing Yoruba on the red carpet!

In this vHopeful Conversation, I speak with Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Yoruba Richen about her powerful documentary short, Free Joan Little, and the extraordinary movement that rallied around a young Black woman’s right to defend herself against sexual violence. We explore how Yoruba’s work on Rosa Parks led her to Joan’s story, the archival discoveries that helped her center Joan’s voice while respecting her privacy, and the coalition-building that brought very different communities together to fight for her freedom. Our conversation also touches on William Kunstler, the power of music in movements for change, and the ongoing struggles of incarcerated women. At its heart is a question that feels urgent today: what can this history teach us about turning solidarity into action?

Congratulations to @redrubes14 @cwdivadance @bonnie__bertram @retroreport on the @cinema.eye.honors shorts shortlist that means FREE JOAN LITTLE @freejoanlittle will screen on Dec 2nd at DCTV @dctvny in NYC and Dec 5th at Vidiots in LA @vidiots! Congratulations also on the film’s recent win @hsdff!

Listen to our full conversation wherever you get your podcasts and find the post on Dream of a Better World & Hope for Film Substacks.

This has been an incredible week! From Lincoln Center to Woodstock Film Festival to Feminist Center’s 50th anniversary. I got to sing, hang out with my tribe, and mingle with some incredible filmmakers and change makers! Life is good!

Thank you @toshireagon for an incredible evening to honor Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon by bringing so many talented people together. My cup is full of songs to carry on this journey.

Thank you @woodstockfilmfestival for a well curated season and a space where filmmakers can share and receive. The tools you provided were invaluable.

Thank you to the badass women at Feminist Center for Reproductive Liberation for your continuous fight for Reproductive Freedom! To be an independent entity 50 years in the game, speaks to your dedication and tenacity in the fight! Cheers to 50+ more years!

Icing on the cake, I got to spend time with my girls and see friends literally in passing!!! @geetagandbhir @denagray @jamaicanpua @al_is_a_payne @kjacobson007 @misscortes (shot the video in the post)🫶🏽

Thank you @bonnie__bertram and Graham for letting me crash! Great conversations!
