When you have a January birthday, you learn over the years that it’s a weird and hard time to celebrate. Everyone’s broke & tired plus the weather sucks.

For me, I was born during a blizzard in mid Missouri and have always romanticized the idea of spending it in warmer climate.

The dream was fulfilled this last winter when I took off to Joshua Tree with my birthday week twin @jziman_design and together we did a play shoot with their chainmail design pieces.

The sunsets there never cease to please my soul and heart, who is always in search of a big open sky.

It’s an exciting challenge to make a smaller space functional and aestehtic, especially for this 560 square foot unit. Many of the pieces are from salvaged materials, including the gorgeous chandelier.

In Prototype Process 2, students reverse-engineered a speaker and learned how to put the parts back together in their own product. Here are just a few of the beautifully crafted working models students made!

The Fishbone Chair
@jziman_design

I built this chair while studying Scandinavian Furniture Design at DIS in Copenhagen. I found inspiration through New Nordic Cuisine and Danish boating culture. I was initially inspired by René Redzepi’s use of fish bones at Restaurant Noma. A fish bone is something that we would normally discard or even find a nuisance, but in this case it is valued for its beauty, form and vitality. I then noticed that the internal structure of wooden Viking ships have a skeleton similar to that of a fish.

Finally, I chose a weave material (fishing line) that did not distract from the structure and purity of the wood, but added to the nautical root of the piece.

This chair was made entirely by hand. We drew 1:1 scale orthographics and used the tracings as templates for the chair. It was then a matter of exactitude, joint fitting, weaving and a ton of sanding. The maple was finished using a traditional Danish soaping method.
