Life is too short to drink bad wine! Red wine is my drink. Nothing beats sharing good times with good people and good wine!

🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇸 Grandi Langhe 26 and 27 January 2026 10th edition - OGR Turin -

The most important wine event in Piedmont and one of the largest in Italy has concluded a few months ago, with 515 wineries from the Langhe, Roero, and throughout Piedmont presenting the latest DOC and DOCG vintages at the OGR in Turin.

An event that represents the entire Piedmont wine region, with an extraordinary success in attendance from industry professionals and journalists (remember, the event was not open to the public), both Italian and foreign, especially from the East. Obviously, the main interest went to the presentation of the 2022 Barolo and 2023 Barbaresco seasons, but without taking away visibility or interest from Alta Langa, Gattinara Monferrato, Roero, Asti, etc.

The organization is good and efficient, even in the face of a significant increase in cellars and the public, which make the beautiful location of the old railway workshops feel cramped. Taste counters in classic arrangement, ordered and divided into sectors by colour, shoulder strap and glass, appropriate (serigafrato would be more suitable), coffee break point always active, correct emptying of the spittoons, excellent and well organised press room with good service from the sommeliers (whom we sincerely thank for the service), very interesting and use the UPs offered, arranged and speeded up the wardrobe service, the wine productions presented by the various companies are on average very valid. We'll talk about vintages in the follow-up to this post.

And now we hope for constructive observations, such as the lack of a lunchtime buffet, given the wine types and their flavors. A refreshment break before starting again would have been greatly appreciated. This situation is present at all major events; however, it should be noted that there was a small food corner for the press.

The modest amount of parking, which however, being in the centre, can be passed over, the bathrooms are not always clean and do not have paper or electric towels (out of order)

Another vision to complete the beautiful and....

The Break..my thoughts.

In honour of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, it seemed fitting to share this one today. With thanks (again!) to @emmawirdnam and the @nomads for teaching me the intricacies of this fabulously English game and giving another perfect backdrop for the @stuartbroad Beyond the Wicket collection of wonderful wines inspired by his time on tour with England and collated by @laithwaites.wine

From the Western Cape of South Africa, this Malbec is from one of my favourite producers Journey’s End and is as bold as you would expect. The key flavours are plum, violet and smokey spices, which are absolutely perfect for this time of year. It’s velvety smooth and combines a passion for sport, wine and the finer things in life…such as any of Marian Keyes books!
I’ve chosen The Break for this pairing as I truly believe that Amy deserves at least one incredible glass of wine for the more than strange situation that Hugh puts her in when he asks for 6 months off their marriage so that he can go and be free- I guess similar to going on a Cricket tour…although I think Stuart would be in regular contact!! Six months with no contact, no ties and no parenting for him whilst she has to not only pick up the pieces but also fend off the inevitable questions from well-meaning but nosy friends and family. As always, Marian absolutely nails the dysfunctional family vibe. I thought the relationship between the daughters/cousin was so good and this is where she comes into her own, you buy into every element of the story; the bad husbands club, the social media highs and lows, the juggle of being a working Mum and the question of abortion in Ireland. These topics are all sub topics (there are more) but they are seamlessly woven into the story with such skill.
I can’t talk about the end, but I will say I was happy with it- rounded off perfectly but with potential scope for a revisit.

What would you make of a relationship break; solid no or raise a glass to living life your own way?
