Hi all! Amanda Lilleston here, and it's Day 4 of my #StampsAlumTakeover. Today I'm going to talk about my time at #umstamps as an MFA student. A magical time! I'm kind of joking, but also kind of serious. An MFA at UM was incredibly challenging. I worked with many studio faculty who pushed me harder than I'd ever been pushed. Biggest lesson I learned-- show up to your studio and get the work done. It sounds simple, but making creative work is a serious leap of faith. At Michigan, I learned to make that leap over and over and over again. I was very lucky to be a part of a highly ambitious cohort for 3 years (2009-2012) who are still rocking it today -- see our catalog cover in the last image.

As a student I spent a lot of time in my studio, but also in other schools across campus. For many years I worked as a lab assistant in Anatomical Sciences in the Medical School. I took classes in the School of Natural Resources and Environment. I had advisors in the School of Public Health.

Image 1 is a picture of my baren. It's 612 ball bearings. I bought this with the help of @umstamps, and it completely transformed my work. This baren is a small example of the enormous support I received from UM. Financial support is one thing, but much more importantly, I got to be a part of a community for three years where peers, faculty and staff were invested in my development and success as a professional artist. Stakes were high and we all worked very hard. I will always be grateful for my time at UM. Go Blue.
