‘Cosmic Reef’ is one of the healthiest reefs near Miami that few people are aware of. On September 1st, 1996, an artificial reef was born when 120,000 tons of limestone boulders were deposited from barges into 11 rows and 36 piles across 40 acres of sandy seafloor just 2.5 miles off the coast of Miami. It was largely forgotten, but against all odds a vibrant community of corals and marinelife have naturally colonized this reef over the past three decades. So large it is visible from space, it has emerged as a symbol of nature’s tenacity and resilience, demonstrating the important role artificial reefs can play in our effort to restore Florida’s coral reef ecosystems.

We have been monitoring Cosmic Reef since 2010, and transplanted corals to it from the Deep Dredge in 2014. Beginning in 2024 we partnered with @DiversParadiseMiami and @ReefCorpsGlobal to lead monthly reef cleanups on the site. The trips have removed hundreds of pounds of debris and lobster trap ropes entangled in the corals. Over the past 6 months we have engaged in a film and photography project documenting the remarkable biodiversity and beauty of Cosmic Reef. #coralmorphologic #coralcity #cosmicreef #miami
