What a wonderful Sunday afternoon celebrating Troublemakers X with Reel Youth! 🎬🏳️‍🌈

For the past 9 years, SFU LIVE has proudly supported the Troublemakers program. We’re grateful to share our space, with a big thank-you to @sfucontemporaryarts, who play a part in bringing this meaningful project to life.

Troublemakers X with Reel Youth brings 2SLGBTQIA+ youth and queer elders together through storytelling, film, and community. 💜

A huge shout-out to @reelyouth, @queerfilmfest, and @outinschools, for making the day so special!

Here’s to 10 incredible years of Troublemakers — and we’re ready for Troublemakers XI! 🌈🎥

I am so honoured to have co-directed Amir, The Light Within, which premiered this week at @queerfilmfest. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

I created this film alongside an incredible team of young people as part of TROUBLEMAKERS X, a mini-documentary program for queer youth.

Growing up a Lesbian in Damascus, Syria, Amir (then Amira) was the final child in a family of boys - someone who carried both his grandmother’s name and her face.

Amir, The Light Within, is a tender portrait of Amir’s gender-affirming transition, with all its grief and love, and the light he has carried through both.

It was a privilege to get to know Amir, to hear his story, and to honour the trust he placed in us to share it.

Truthfully, I’m very shy about sharing the awards I’ve won over the years, as sharing personal wins has always been tough for me.

Not Quite Quarantine (2022) was screened in over 30 film fests, won 17 awards, and won first place, and an Outstanding Fiction Award from a chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Knowing that I made something that actually meant so much to so many people was an unforgettable experience… and bringing every single one of my family and friends along for it, whether it be through cameos or actual roles.

I never posted about it at the time. This carousel includes a few clips and the laurels from festival runners who were so kind whose words meant a lot, that I wish I acknowledged better.

So, to everyone who gave this film a room and an audience— thank you very much. The film found people it was supposed to find.
