AP African American Studies is under attack. Teaching America shows what’s at stake — through the teachers and students on the front lines. 🎬 We gathered to watch, listen, and learn — hosting a screening and Q&A with the film’s director and a participant, joined by our ED Kim Callinan. Grateful to March On! founder Robert Raben for opening his doors for this conversation. The classroom is a civil rights battleground. We’re paying attention. #MarchOn #TeachingAmerica #APAfricanAmericanStudies

Last Tuesday, I had the great honor of bringing Teaching America back to DC, and the greatest honor of screening the film with the Thurgood Marshall Foundation and then with the March On Festival and Raben.

Justice Thurgood Marshall has always been a beacon and an anchor of my work - from my days in college learning about the long road to Brown v Board of Education to law school, where I studied his strategic and jurisprudential prowess and philosophy, to my years at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund where we continually strived to serve and advocate in a manner that lived up to and reflected his founding mark.

So to share the film with Thurgood Marshall’s grandchildren and family: Cecilia, Will, Melanie and Edward and the crew carrying his work and legacy forward at the Thurgood Marshall Foundation . . .doesn’t get much better.

And then to join Kim Callinan, director of the March On festival and the lovely March On festival crew, my dear friend Robert Raben, and Reese Brackeen, one of the students in the film - among so many friends and colleagues who came out, was a magnificent capstone to a historic day. Teaching America had its DC premiere at the March On festival and won the Grand Prize.

Thanks to everyone who joined us from @deven_in_dc to @nlwithbroe to @mdorsainvil (and multitudes in between!). A few photos with friends here - missing most folks who were in the room cause we didn’t get a group shot. And a last pic of my besties (HBD @davetkumar) who welcomed me home with dinner and wine and joy and matching shirts.
