A new official still and BTS for @embers.filmofficial featuring the incredible @thechristopher.cook

Over the past few years, I have worked with many actors in many different roles. However, almost every actor I have met, I never knew personally beforehand. So when the opportunity came to cast Christopher Cook, a man I knew quite well, it was a different experience. A good friend and inspiring creative on my journey, Chris was someone I never quite knew where I wanted to put. I had never been able to find the correct spot. Knowing him so well, and being so close with him made it difficult for my mind to mold him into a role. He is so kind and so fun to be around that I was never certain he would ever find a place in my incredibly bleak and brutal films. However this time I realised there was a very real possibility that he could be the one to play the Vagabond. In that moment, I saw an evil and a hate in Chris that I had never before or bore witness to. I felt in my heart that this could be one of the best decisions I would make for Embers. And he was incredible. In pre-production, Chris was receptive and proactive. Diving deep into the mind of the vagabond and pulling references from similar characters to understand the evil and the psychopathy of the man whom he would take the identity of. We had numerous meetings that repeatedly reassured me that I had made the right call. On set I watched my funny, kind, and loving friend sink into a mask of pure malice. He played that role and showed me a side of himself that I had never seen before being so scary, I was sometimes nervous to talk to him. Not to say directing him was difficult. Chris was excellent as an actor, taking direction, following instructions, and working through scenes politely and responsively before climbing right back into the skin of a vicious killer. I am very excited for people to see just what he can do, because it was incredible.

A Note from the Director

To my crew,

Thank you, each and every one of you. All of you are incredibly skilled and talented individuals who saw my project and took a chance on it. You guys made this film what it was, and as an indie director with very few resources to make large-scale work, that means everything to me.

Embers was a film built from nothing, and yet this team made a project that looks like a Hollywood film. I started with a simple script and a challenge: to make a film that told a story without a word. From it, I created the largest project I have ever made. A story of human nature, of the wrath that comes from being dealt an unfair hand, and the dangers of where that wrath can lead a person.

As with all of my films thus far, this story is inspired in some way by my own perspectives and views on life. I wrote it based on the flaws that plague me and exaggerated them to tell such a grand story. What I could not have expected was for my little self-reflective piece to turn into an evolution in how I make films.

I was privileged to finally work on a film where all I had to do was direct; every other hat was worn by a member of my incredible crew. This allowed me to make sure I told the story exactly the way I wanted to tell it. And despite what my perpetually grumpy face would suggest, I had an absolute blast. I got to make an incredible piece of art, work among filmmakers I have long looked up to and been inspired by, and spend a day doing what I love most in the world.
Out there, in the mud, among the trees, me and 20 other incredible human beings made what, 3 years ago, I could never have even conceived of doing.

So again, I wanted to say thank you. Of course, to my crew, but also to anyone and everyone who allowed me to be in the position I’m in. I’m blessed to have been given the opportunity to do what I do, and I don’t intend to stop. I’ll keep making, keep meeting new people, keep doing what I love.

I can’t wait for everyone to see this film. It will blow you all away.

Crew Shoutout: Director of Photography @dorianthedp From the get-go, it was apparent Dorian was going to be doing more than creating images. It would be safe to say that Dorian represented a sizable chunk of the brain that made Embers happen. From the earliest stages of brainstorming a script, Dorian was there, believing in the project from the start. Planning and giving ideas, the script would not have been what it was without him. Continuing on, Dorian was present through all of preproduction, strategizing, and onboarding crew, helping source equipment, and bringing his own gear to the table to help this vision come true. Dorian doesn’t just make shots, he breathes life and originality into everything he does. He will bring 110 percent to a project, Imbuing every step of the process with his creative vision. Fortunately, his vision is often genius. Once set started, Dorian was a machine, commanding both the camera team and G&E. From video village, Dorian oversaw everything, on the monitor at all times, he carefully and efficiently coordinated his crew to be efficient and productive. All while making some of the most beautiful shots you have ever seen. It cannot be stated that the skill and craftsmanship are presented in every frame of Dorian’s work. Perfecting lens choice, camera settings, lighting setups, and camera angles. Every bit of Embers was a masterpiece thanks to his vision. Now going into post-production, Dorian tackles coloring his beautiful work, and rest assured, he will not leave this film until it is perfect enough to meet his standards. Dorian your are a skillful professional and visionary artist. Thank you for being so involved in this film and helping make it happen.

Crew Shout Out: Camera and Steadicam OP @xgorecorex At first glance, it would be easy to think that Corey was as one of the coolest members on set with his know how and insane personal Steadicam setup. And as it turns out you’d be right. Operating his Steadicam, Dolly and Tripod setup with ingenuity, creativity and precision. Corey brought every shot to fruition with flawless execution. Working closely with our Director of Photography and the rest of camera team. Corey is the reason every shot of this film looks as good as it does. He showed incredible skill and intuition with his use of his own equipment, and adapted to the ever evolving list of shots. Even bringing in his own incredible original shots on the fly. Overall Corey was absolute standout amongst in already incredible and talented camera team and we were so excited to have him out there to do what he does. Corey you were a dream, and your operating was inspiring. Thanks for being out there with us.
