Grief is something else. People avoid bringing Jaylen up sometimes because they’re afraid of “reminding” us about his death or making the sadness worse. Wanting to tell stories, repeat his jokes, remember small details of his life, or simply hear someone else say his name is a way of family staying connected to him. I remember when he was little he had an allergic reaction to something he ate. He swelled up like a balloon, and although it wasn’t funny at the time, We all did laugh so hard about it afterwords. His lips hands were so chubby lol. Those memories matter because they bring back the living version of Jaylen. Not just the fact that he’s gone, but the way he sounded, reacted, looked at everybody, the chaos of ordinary moments. Grief isn’t only about missing someone at their best; it’s also missing the ridiculous moments, the annoying moments, the “remember when…” moments. We miss our Jaylen! #justiceforjaylenreeves

Hi baby, as the new year dawned, your mom & dad and Nani & Grandpa welcomed it with your brothers lighting sparklers. Mom & Dad taught Shia how to hold the sparkler and not be afraid, just as you would have. Though you were not physically with us, your presence wrapped around us. We step into this new year, we carry you. rooted in family, grounded in faith, and unwavering in our commitment to truth and the continued pursuit of justice for you. I love you baby!
