THWEBULA — Refuse AW20/21

Inspired by the stories I grew up hearing, ukuthwebula explores the relationship between power, image, and identity. In African folklore, to “thwebula” is to capture more than just a person’s appearance — it is to take a piece of their spirit, consciousness, or sense of self.

This collection draws parallels between that belief and photography itself: the act of being seen, captured, consumed, and remembered. Through distorted silhouettes and layered storytelling, Refuse reflects on visibility, cultural fear, and the power attached to the image.
