BaleWorks reimagines staging as both a material practice and a cultural act. Constructed from straw bales held within modular timber frames, the project operates simultaneously as an architectural installation, infrastructural prototype, and platform for engagement between the public and surrounding landscape.

Developed through a cross-disciplinary collaboration spanning architecture, plant science, and landscape architecture, the installation foregrounds the often-invisible relationships between agriculture, construction, and waste, positioning the act of building itself as a form of performance.

Introducing Buildfest 2026: Staging Installation 4, BaleWorks, by @marta.h.wisniewska founder of @regenerativearchitecturelab and faculty at @cornellaap

BaleWorks reimagines staging as both a material practice and a cultural act. Constructed from straw bales held within modular timber frames, the project operates simultaneously as an architectural installation, an infrastructural prototype, and a platform for engagement between the public and the surrounding landscape. Developed through a cross-disciplinary collaboration among faculty and students in architecture, plant science, and landscape architecture at Cornell University, with support from a waste management industry partner, the installation foregrounds the often-invisible relationships between agriculture, construction, and waste, positioning the act of building itself as a form of performance.

Grateful to have participated in the Bio-Based Materials Collective (BBMC) 2026 Summit in the Hudson Valley on May 8 as both a speaker and "Fungal Foundations: Exploring Mycelium as a Building Material" workshop leader alongside an inspiring group of experts across agriculture, forestry, finance, and design.

I shared my work @regenerativearchitecturelab @cornellaap on bridging research and pedagogy through bio-based materials classes and design-build initiatives, and led a workshop exploring mycelium bound composites as a material and collaborative practice.

Thankful for the conversations, connections, and collective momentum around regenerative material futures.

From ASSOCIATION VOLUME 13

PROJECT: “Terra Firma: NewGrounds” by J. Mayen (B.Arch ’26), Marta H. Wiśniewska, Maxwell Rodencal, Julian Helbling, Nandini Mohan via the AAP Regenerative Architecture Lab

Terra Firma: NewGrounds is a full-scale installation of nine 8-foot rammed earth columns. The project examines rammed earth as a sustainable alternative to carbon-intensive construction, which contributes nearly 40% of global CO₂ emissions.

Developed through soil testing, prototyping, and collaboration with engineers, the installation demonstrates the structural strength and durability of compacted earth. Soil sourced from Ithaca was tested for stability, moisture, and composition, then refined to ensure the columns’ resilience.

By combining historical techniques with contemporary research, the project highlights circular design and on-site resource use, positioning rammed earth as a practical material for low-carbon building.

ICSA 2025. @regenerativearchitecturelab presented our paper “Structural design with rammed earth - a shear strength design procedure and case study” which was also co-authored by Dan Bergsagel of @schlaichbergermannpartner .

The paper outlines quick, cost-effective, and accurate material testing protocols to determine key attributes of three raw sub-soils with different geological formations used in an installation: evaluation methods for mechanical properties required for structural design; and analysis of scientific data produced during a fully instrumented deconstruction to verify initial evaluations.

One year after 2024 Build Fest, MycoShell is standing proudly on the grounds of the original Woodstock Festival, becoming more and more part of the ground its materials originally came from.

NEXT WEEK! Excited to contribute to this amazing seminar next Tuesday hosted by the CA. Research Network at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design to share and discuss the future of earthen construction alongside a great group of actors!

I will be presenting my work and research done with the @regenerativearchitecturelab at Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and Dan Bergsagel from @schlaichbergermannpartner on integrating and verifying virgin and surplus earth material for structural use in the building industry.

Check out the poster for more information.
Sees snart! :)

RAK kolmanda semestri avalik seminar keskendub regeneratiivse arhitektuuri ja materjalide mõtestamisele kolmest rahvusvahelisest vaatenurgast. Arutleme, kuidas need materjalid aitavad ehitussektoril liikuda lineaarsetelt protsessidelt ringmajandusele, vähendades süsiniku- ja keskkonnajalajälge ning säästes loodusvarasid.

🎤𝗦𝗼̃𝗻𝗮 𝘃𝗼̃𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗱:

🔹Aveliina Helm – bioloog, looduskaitseteadlane, Kliimaministri teadusnõunik, TÜ taastamisökoloogia professor
🔹 Dr. Giulia Celentano – arhitekt, Regenerative Materials, ETH Zürich, Šveits (online)
🔹 Marta H. Wisniewska – arhitekt, Regenerative Architecture Lab, Cornelli ülikool, USA (online)

Pileteid saate soetada Fientast (link bios) ja tudengitele on seminar tasuta!
