I was talking to someone yesterday about the importance of community, especially related to grassroots music scenes. There’s no better example of that than @the_bbe_store in terms of the space they’ve created, what they’ve achieved, and the huge response there’s been past 48hrs, as they once again fight to keep operating.

The BBE Store has become a vital component in the tapestry of London’s nightlife over the past decade. An independent venue that champions black music in every form, allowing DJs & artists complete freedom to programme events without compromise.

Built from the fabric of legendary label @bbemusic (celebrating their 30 year legacy this year) the space also operates as a record shop in the day. A business operated by music lovers for music lovers, with one of the cleanest sound systems in the city to boot.

I’ve played here many times, solo & with @firstwordrecords, and attended tons more events; the list of music legends that've passed thru is mad.

I literally can’t think of another space in London where I’ve felt more at home past few years than this spot. A home from home. That’s why it was a no brainer for me to hold my 50th birthday party there. Infact, after decades DJing & promoting, the only events I’ve personally put on this year have been here.

It’s no coincidence that this week the Race Equality in Music Event Licensing report was published, confirming there’s been huge racial bias in licensing & policing disproportionately affecting black-led music events. Tell us something we didn’t know! We’ve all got LOTS of stories..

Despite the team working with Hackney Council to placate concerns, limiting opening hours to 11pm, sound controls & so on, orchestrated noise complaints have continued to come from a new residential building across the way. One of the maddest things to me about gentrification is the idea of people moving to buzzing busy industrial areas, then going out of their way to change it & stifle the life that was there long before.

Anyway, if you feel like me, please read the instructions above & sign + share this link

Solidarity to the BBE fam.
