Pull It: Grime’s Greatest Reloads

The reload, the wheel-up, the forward. It is one of the cornerstones of sound system and electronic music culture.

Its roots are firmly planted in Jamaica’s sound system scene, where the selector would pull a tune back to the start. Sometimes it was because the track had completely mashed up the dance, other times a single lyric sparked such a huge reaction it demanded to be heard again. In clashes, a well placed dubplate could earn a forward that shifted the entire momentum. These moments turned listening into participation, with the crowd actively shaping the energy and outcome of the clash. Individuals would sometimes lick shots into the air as a sign of respect.

When the Windrush generation arrived in the UK, they brought sound system culture with them. The forward quickly became embedded in British dancehall and reggae clashes, carrying over that same call and response energy. As new generations began to forge their own sounds, drawing deeply from their roots, genres like Jungle, Drum and Bass and UK Garage emerged. Within these sounds, the wheel-up remained vital, becoming especially central to the identity and energy of Garage.

As Garge evolved into Grime, the reload became even more prominent, on pirate radio, in clashes and at live events. While instrumentals could earn a wheel, it was often the MC’s bars that truly demanded it. MCs would call for the reload, urging the crowd to respond, because a wheel-up wasn’t given lightly. It was a mark of respect.

In a culture built on competition and clashing, reloads became a way to judge these clashes. The MCs would get a wheel from crowds or when clashing on radio from their peers responses.

As the scene has evolved MCs have become so prominent they are able to earn a wheel from just an ad-lib, instrumentals from his an intro or DJs from their technical ability.

Love it or hate it the wheel up remains an important part of the scene, so to highlight that here are our 20 favourites. Which ones did we miss?
