Last week “The Cartography of Self,” curated by @creativedreamersnetwork, opened @618. This collection is an exploration of identity. The 13 pieces I selected were tributes to the survival of the human spirit through genocide, incarceration, sexual assault, mental illness, and even execution. Some pieces center on particular people; others are indictments of the systems of oppression that continue to inflict trauma upon vulnerable people and populations. Several of the pieces in this exhibit are explorations of my most inner and vulnerable Self. I sometimes feel that I exist in fragments due to the trauma I have endured. This is not unusual for survivors; trauma often results in the severance of parts of memory, identity, and personality, and perpetuates this both physically and psychologically. For a long time I’ve chased “wholeness” and characterized my mental health journey as trying to put the pieces of me back together. But lately, I’ve questioned this goal. Why can’t I embrace, love, nurture the incomplete, the parts of me that are a work in progress? While they may never piece together perfectly, I’m here. I’m standing. I built myself back up, and I’m proud of my Self that has survived, scars and all. Art is the primary way I process my trauma and drive myself to move forward. Thank you for witnessing me - my authentic, incomplete Self - and continuing to encourage and support me in finding my equilibrium. I love each and every one of you who came out to see this exhibit. “The Cartography of Self” is on display until June 8. Come by 618 anytime between 4-10 Tuesday through Saturday and check it out yourself.

Artist Spotlight: @remycrypt ✨ “Remy Crypt comes from a place of surrealistic dark fantasy where the ruins of old and ancient spirits contrast with a cyberpunk future. The pieces are meant to build a world and tell a story that has yet to be written in words, each piece leaving keys behind to unlock the next part of the mystery through a psychedelic world of cute creatures and eerie landscapes.” We’re honored to feature Remy’s work in Cartography of Self, a group exhibition exploring identity, memory, visibility, and selfhood through immersive and imaginative artistic worlds. Join us this Sunday for the opening reception to experience the exhibition, meet the artists, and celebrate in community. 💛 🗓 Sunday, May 17th 🕒 4PM-6PM programming, doors stay open later 📍 618 H St. NW, Washington DC #CartographyOfSelf #DCArt #SurrealArt #DMVArtists #ArtistSpotlight
