Ten critically acclaimed reviews in ten days for 10 Days in a Madhouse:

I’ve had to sit with this for a while. Honestly, I think what has stayed with me is how each critic came at Dr. Blackwell from a totally different angle, and how all those perspectives landed in really personal ways for people.

There was a moment noted in The Globe and Mail that at curtain call, the audience wasn’t sure whether to clap or boo, before it eventually turned into applause. I’ll be honest - that’s kind of funny to me in hindsight 😂 I’ve spent a lot of time in comedic roles, so I’m usually trying to get people to laugh or come along for the ride. But in this case, it meant something different. It meant it hit. It meant I did my job. They lived in the uncomfortable with me, and I don’t take that lightly.

This kind of work only happens because of everyone in the room - the conductors, the directors, the composers, the people shaping the sound and the score, the technicians dialing in every detail, and the orchestra and audio team who really became part of the storytelling in their own way.

Grateful for how far this journey has taken me, and to everyone who brought this to life, and those who truly engaged with the work. Thank you for showing up.

I’m at a loss for words to express my gratitude for this piece and for having had the chance to tackle the role of Nellie. Ten Days in a Madhouse is a true work of genius from @hannahmoscovitch and @reneorth - the storytelling, the sound world, the construction, the innovation.. all of it comes together to make an engrossing, all encompassing psychological drama unlike anything you’ve experienced in an opera house before. I truly think it will become part of the contemporary opera canon and I’m thrilled that it seems the reviewers and audiences agree (some included here with gratitude).

Performing the role of Nellie required a new level of both focus and abandon from me. It’s always terrifying to do something very raw and vulnerable in front of audiences, but the amazing cast of people involved (from the production staff to the artistic team) lifted me up and provided me with the safety net I needed to feel that I could try and fail without judgement.

Thanks to Joanna Settle, our wonderful director, and @horstopera our unflappable music director and conductor, for their leadership and warmth (and exacting high standards). Thanks to especially to @michaelhmori at @tapestryopera for trusting me with this role.

I’ll miss you, Nellie. Til next time. ❤️

⭐️ “… a tour de force in the role of Nellie Bly. Her voice has a crystal-clear, porcelain-fine high extension with a strong, supple core, vocally epitomizing the multifaceted experience of feminine strength and vulnerability…Asselin personified the role with an authenticity that made me feel like I knew Nellie…” (BROADWAY WORLD)
⭐️ “Asselin delivered a bravura performance of heroic proportions, repeatedly scaling the dizzy heights of Orth’s punishing tessitura.” (OPERA GOING TORONTO)
⭐️ “Top vocal honours deservedly went to Mireille Asselin, whose heartfelt portrayal of [Nellie] moved me. Vocally she was superb…She threw caution to the wind and sang her heart out.” (OPERA CANADA)
⭐️ “Asselin was a powerhouse from beginning to end, utterly believable.” (BACHTRACK)
⭐️ “She’s a pleasure to listen to and achingly difficult to watch.” (GLOBE AND MAIL)
⭐️ “a tour-de-force performance.” (SCHMOPERA)
