Today at the House of Representatives, we honored the life and legacy of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. — the longest-serving Speaker in our history, who made Congress his second home for decades.

21 colleagues rose to deliver eulogies — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — a full half day of stories and memories. Aaminin ko, akala ko baka maging dragging. But each speaker revealed another facet of the man — isang aspeto ng kanyang buhay na hindi ko nasaksihan — at sa bawat tribute, lalo akong humanga.

Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo — his running mate in 1998 — spoke of how she witnessed up close how deeply JDV believed in the Philippines. He dreamed big for our nation and worked tirelessly to make those dreams real.

DAR Sec. Conrado Estrella III remembered him with humor and affection — “malaki ang tenga, nakataas ang kilay, high-waist ang pantalon” — and yet spoke with deep respect. JDV, he said, never held a grudge, even against those who had wronged him. That kind of grace is rare.

I worked for Ninong Joe & Ninang Gina de Venecia fresh out of college.

JDV would later be known to history as the longest-serving Speaker of the House, serving for 13 non-consecutive years. But to me, JDV & @manayginadevenecia were my first mentors - who shaped who I became.

Sa mga Gen Z at millennials na hindi inabot ang ‘glory days’ ni JDV, mas maayos ang pulitika noon because of JDV. He wasn’t just a political figure. He was a bridge-builder, a consensus-maker, a believer in dialogue and democratic institutions — a public servant whose life was rooted in service to the Filipino people.

Last Dec., I saw him for his birthday — not knowing it would be the last time. By then, speaking had become an effort for him because of his dementia. His decline over the years had been evident, and heartbreaking. When I approached him, Ninang Gina reminded him who I was. And then, a brief moment of clarity as he looked at me and said: “Ikaw ang magaling na Castaneda!” I smiled — even joked to myself, “May iba pa ba siyang kilalang Castaneda?” Now, I hold on to those words with so much gratitude.

There were moments when his face and eyes would suddenly light up — a name remembered, a story resurfacing. If you watched closely, even for a split second, you’d catch the fire in his eyes — a glimpse of the man he once was. After all, he wasn’t the longest-serving Speaker of the House for nothing.

JDV & Ninang Gina were my very first mentors as a professional. I stayed with them through his two terms in 1992-1998 as Speaker and even when he ran for President against Erap Estrada. He mentored me with patience and generosity; Ninang Gina, his steady and brilliant partner, was his quiet force and secret weapon.

I’m deeply grateful I was able to talk to him & say goodbye, imperfect as that moment was.

Rest well, Ninong Joe. Your mission is done. Your life was one of purpose and service. Your legacy lives on — through Ninang Gina, through @repcdevenecia , through the country you served, and through all of us you mentored and believed in.

Set against the backdrop of the iconic Manaoag Cathedral, this Souvenir Center is more than just a retail space—it’s an immersive experience and a contribution to the public realm.

Retail Experience
Inspired by the Guggenheim Museum’s spiral design, visitors are guided through six cylindrical galleries, each representing a municipality from Pangasinan’s 4th district. Starting as a single-story mass to relate to nearby Rizal Park, the building gradually elevates to three stories to harmonize with the grandeur of the basilica. Wrapped in locally sourced clay bricks in shades of yellow, the design pays homage to the basilica’s sacred significance.

Public Space
In a place that welcomes up to 800,000 pilgrims annually, the surrounding plazas are vital in managing large crowds. To support this, the rooftops of the six cylindrical structures are transformed into sky plazas with amphitheaters and parasols, accessible to the public even after operating hours. During pilgrimages, these sky parks provide a serene overflow space where visitors can still participate in religious ceremonies. On regular days, they serve as vibrant public spaces for the local community.

A blend of cultural respect, innovation, and community connection, this design celebrates both heritage and modernity. 🌟

On the first day of December, as @thesandboxco marked the closing of its 10th anniversary season, I had the privilege of witnessing the magic of 𝐓𝐢𝐧𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: 𝐀 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞—𝐈𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 in Makati City. This standing ovation-worthy production was spearheaded by 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧 @repcdevenecia , affectionately regarded as a champion of Philippine creatives, who served as the managing artistic director. The play starred award-winning actress @missizacalzado as Sugar, the heart of the story, alongside @rodyvera , @gabbygpadilla , and @ketchup.eusebio , who brought the letter writers to life. The production was directed by Gawad Buhay awardee @j2jamora .

The play is an adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s book Tiny Beautiful Things, in which the author assumes the pseudonym Sugar while writing as an advice columnist. Sugar’s heartfelt and deeply personal responses resonate with millions, and Calzado’s performance captured the character’s compassionate essence. Drawing from her own lived experiences of heartache, grief, loss, and joy, Sugar dispenses wisdom that feels both intimate and universal, serving as a guide and confidante to the letter writers.

The cast and production team masterfully brought these letters to life, making the quest for answers deeply compelling. Calzado’s portrayal of Sugar—grounded in emotional authenticity and physicality—made the narrative incredibly relatable and poignant.

Before the performance, I had the chance to speak with Toff De Venecia, the visionary leader behind the production. When I asked him about his favorite line from the play, he shared, “𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑐𝑘, 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐ℎ. 𝑆𝑜𝑏𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑛𝑖𝑦𝑎 𝑠𝑎 𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛. Makati: A Canvass of Modern Art and Timeless Brutalism 🏛️

Walking through Makati’s Central Business District feels like stepping inside a living masterpiece of Leandro V. Locsin, our National Artist for Architecture. His iconic designs, from the Makati Stock Exchange to Leando V. Locsin Building, helped shape the city into the financial and cultural hub it is today.

Makati isn’t just another city—it’s a vibe. Unlike cookie-cutter global cities that have lost their identity, Makati oozes character and soul. It’s where history and modernity collide, a perfect mix of grit and grace that speaks to artists, architects, and history lovers alike.

The city’s Brutalist architecture, championed by Locsin and other Filipino greats, is all about bold, minimalist designs with raw materials and functional beauty. It’s not just a look—it’s a statement. Locsin even gave it a tropical twist, like the brise soleils on the Makati Stock Exchange, blending global influences with Filipino flair.

These concrete giants? They’re more than buildings—they’re storytellers. Weathered but standing strong, they reflect the country’s journey to independence and its quest to define a unique identity.

The city boasts some of the most iconic Brutalist landmarks in the Philippines, including: Ramon Cojuangco Building, Makati Stock Exchange, Leandro V. Locsin Building, Philippine National Bank Building,The Peninsula Manila, Sarmiento Building, St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, Legazpi Tower 100, Dominion Building
,ODC International Plaza Building, The Atrium of Makati.

@patrick_kasingsing , the founder of @brutalistpilipinas , said, “Makati’s mix of old and new has given it both (wisdom and character). It is a place of grit and grace. It is a city that learned to embrace its past and present.

Next time you’re in Makati, pause and take it all in. Feel the story, the legacy, the soul.
