Creating world class professional theatre in St. Louis since 1966! 🎭 Celebrating our classic, iconic, electric 60th Season!🎉

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We both had to sit with this show for a while after seeing it. The technical experience was brilliant as always at the Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis. Special kudos to lighting designer Katherine Stepanek for some beautiful moments. The set worked to perfection and the sound was spot-on.

The actor/musicians were so good at what they did. It’s so difficult to be a great actor but to add the musicianship necessary to pull off these two roles, that was a theatrical triumph.

The program notes mention a conversation with one of the writers: Richard Greenblatt who said “…it is a powerful reminder that we get to decide what success is for each of us individually. It gives us permission to look kindly on the kid inside us who had a dream, no matter what came of it. May it continue doing that for a long time to come.” That sums it up beautifully and it is exactly what we carried away once the show ended. That is good theatre!

Canadian classical pianists Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt’s humorous semi-autobiographical 2 Pianos 4 Hands tells of two young musical protégés and their aspirations to become concert pianists. They’ve created an entertaining story with quirky characters, a lot of laughs, and dazzling classical masterpieces.

Actors Richard Todd Adams (Ted) and Matthew McGloin(Richard) will crack you up while enthralling you with their dexterous musicianship and impressive interpretations of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Billy Joel, Elton John, and “Linus and Lucy.”

2 Pianos 4 Hands continues at The Repertory Theater of St Louis through October 25, 2027. Visit repstl.org for more information.

Once a band nerd, always a band nerd. And if you were ALSO a theater geek growing up, 2 Pianos 4 Hands might have been written specifically for us.

Two pianists. 176 keys. A whole lot of laughs.

2 Pianos 4 Hands follows Ted and Richard, two aspiring musicians navigating pushy parents, eccentric piano teachers, cutthroat competitions, and the realization that loving something and being the best at it aren’t necessarily the same thing.

What makes this show so much fun is how effortlessly it brings two worlds together. There’s the precision and sheer talent of a piano recital, paired with the storytelling and comedic timing of great theater. And the music moves from Bach and Beethoven to Billy Joel and Jerry Lee Lewis.

If you ever spent your afternoons in rehearsal, practiced the same eight measures until your family begged you to stop, or believed a chair placement could determine your entire future, there’s a LOT here to appreciate. (First chair was a personality trait.)

But you don’t need to read sheet music to enjoy this one. Beneath all the musical comedy is a surprisingly relatable story about ambition, friendship, and figuring out what success actually looks like.

And I’ve got a deal to help you see it! Use my promo code JAYREP60 for discounted tickets to 2 Pianos 4 Hands.

This one’s especially worth sharing with the friend who survived band camp with you. You know exactly who they are.
