This entire rescue sequence happened in less than two minutes.

We had two safety points already in place: shore-based safety with a throw rope, and boat safety positioned downstream because a missed throw could mean a long swim toward a Class IV rapid.

When the swimmer couldn’t reach the rope, boat safety became the next line of support.

The swimmer had become separated from both the packraft and paddle. I secured the paddle in an eddy, then focused on making contact with the swimmer and assisting them to safety before the rapid below. The packraft was recovered afterward at the bottom of the rapid.

On moving water, situations change fast.

That’s why training, practice, good safety positioning, and continuing education matter.

This year in Mexico, we’ll be participating in the International Swiftwater Congress in Veracruz, and we’re also planning to promote an SSI Packraft Specific Rescue Training course in México.

Some rivers are obstacles. Others are the reason for the journey.

In The Forgotten Coast, the Þjórsá River—Iceland’s largest glacial river—becomes the heart of the expedition. Its surreal colors and shifting channels first inspired the project, yet reaching it meant surviving countless dangerous crossings along the way. There was no guarantee they’d ever make it there.

Hours of brutal weather. Energy gone. One last hope for shelter.

They reach the lighthouse—and discover it’s buried under eight feet of sand. Standing on top of it, the team must decide: stop here, or attempt three massive river crossings in remote Iceland. Adventure doesn’t get more real than this.

It has been an incredible first few days exploring the Idaho Hot Springs Route with @republicofdoom.

So far we have visited 4+ hot springs, ridden over 170miles, consumed many burritos, ridden through a mountain storm, and even seen a double rainbow.

The 2027 Packraft México Fiesta is officially live, and registration is now open.

This is an independently created and locally organized event, built by Mexico’s river community and welcoming paddlers from around the world.

From February 10–15, 2027, we are returning to Jalcomulco, Veracruz, for rivers, learning, community, adventure, Mexican hospitality, and a lot of fun.

Before the Fiesta, optional two-day skills courses led by ACA-certified instructors will take place on February 10–11:

• Beginner Packraft Skills
• Intermediate and Advanced Packraft Skills
• Swiftwater Safety

Course spaces will be limited, and separate registration is required.

Many of the people organizing, guiding, teaching, and supporting the Fiesta are Mexican paddlers and local river professionals who have spent years exploring, navigating, and caring for these rivers.

We are excited to welcome old friends, meet new paddlers, and share Jalcomulco with people who want to learn, connect, and spend meaningful time together on and off the water.

Registration is open, and spaces are limited.

for me, I’m learning it’s truly the simple things, invest in yourself while also pushing away from personal fear. Surrounding yourself with people that truly love and support you && love, support them (no confusing, fake love) and being in the sunshine as much as you can ☀️ Hope everyone is enjoying their sunshine!
