Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz is now equipped with a lifesaving SaveStation®, donated by Deb Hennig from Action First Aid. The unit is outdoors and available for anyone to use, 24/7.

The SaveStation is a temperature-controlled cabinet anchored near the Santa Cruz Surf Museum, equipped with lights for nighttime visibility, an alarm when opened, and text alerts to Santa Cruz Fire Chief Rob Oatey and members of the fire department if the device is used or tampered with.

Having public access to an AED can make a critical difference during cardiac emergencies, greatly improving a person’s chance of survival before first responders arrive. Santa Cruz Fire Department Chief Rob Oatey emphasized the importance of making these lifesaving devices readily available for the community to use in emergencies.

While Santa Cruz intends to expand their number of SaveStation placements, this first placement was intentional considering several factors:

- Cardiac emergencies have occurred in this area
- Popular tourist and pedestrian area
- Recreational activity occurs (e.g., surfing and biking)
- No AEDs in public places or private residences in the area.

Special thank you to the Santa Cruz Fire Department, City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation, Jeremy Gruber from Rescue One Training For Life, Inc. and Hilary Gates from Six Minutes to Live for helping to make this lifesaving addition possible.

There was a ribbon cutting today for the new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Lighthouse Field State Park. This is the first 24/7 accessible AED via SaveStation in the county, but more are coming. The @officialcityofsantacruz has AEDs in city buildings and @santacruzpolice have them in their patrol vehicles.
Speakers today were Fire Chief Robert Oatey with @santacruz_fire, Hilary Gates, the founder of @6min2live and Matt McKeown with @actionfirstaid.ca. @santacruzparksrec was also involved in making this happen.
Thank you to every one of you for making Santa Cruz proactively safer and giving people a better change at surviving a major medical emergency. Please take the time to learn hands only CPR and how to use AEDs, and potentially save a life. @6min2live has pop up CPR lessons that only take a couple of minutes, I’ll let you know about future ones.
