What if the ocean has to break you before it lets you make art?

On @rescueseries we spent months living + shooting on the North Shore of Hawai’i. I spent more days in the water than on land. What people think is romantic… is usually a full day with no toilet, no comfort, no control. I’ve watched directors get seasick within an hour. I’ve watched entire camera teams go down. Usually only a few of us are still standing.
It is unpredictable.
It is insane.
It is the most beautiful place to make cinema.
But the ocean doesn’t care about your plan.
Only your surrender.
5 tips for water cinematography most filmmakers never think about:
• Adjust to the elements — the ocean is the DP.
• Relinquish control — perfection dies out here. Presence wins.
• If you can see the monitor: trust your water operator. Trust body memory.
• Know your lens dynamics so you can cheat angles + depth FAST under pressure.
• Safety → simplicity → speed → THEN beauty. Always in that order.
