I’ve watched this episode more than five times… what about you? 👀

“There is a huge human dimension to regulatory practice.”

This reminder from Dr. Zoe Chitare (@drzoechitare) captures why I loved this conversation so much.

Together, we explored the complexities of regulation in healthcare. Zoe brought her perspective from regulatory law, while I reflected on my experiences as a registered nurse and former academic teaching on regulated programmes, including the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and prescribing.

Different perspectives, but a shared interest in the people behind the policies, professional standards and decisions.

Whether you’re a practitioner, researcher or student, there’s something here to reflect on.

💬 What stood out to you?

Lynn, it was so lovely seeing you in Canada during the FIP Conference. ❤️

After all the conversations, laughter, and moments we’ve shared over the years, getting to spend time with you there was truly special. Some friendships have a way of making every encounter feel warm and familiar, no matter where in the world you find yourselves.

It was wonderful seeing you, Lynn. Here’s to many more moments like this. ❤️🇨🇦✨

The rules may look clear on paper. Real life rarely is.

In the latest episode of Philosophy of Practice, I speak with Dr Zoe Chitare (@drzoechitare ), a socio-legal scholar whose work explores law, justice and power in everyday life.

Our conversation moves across professional regulation, Ubuntu, the hidden structures shaping practice, and the doctoral journey—including the search for academic validation and the movement between invisibility and hypervisibility during a PhD.

For those of us undertaking doctoral study, this conversation asks an important question:

How much of what we experience as personal is actually being shaped by structures we cannot immediately see?

What invisible rule have you encountered in academia or professional practice?

The full episode is available now. Comment ZOE below and I’ll send you the link.

You don’t need to have your entire career figured out before you begin!!!!

In this conversation, Dr Noni reminded me:

“You can’t get anywhere unless you’re actually moving.”

Your first job may not be your ideal job. It may not resemble the career described in the university brochure. But it can still provide experience, skills, relationships—and clarity about what you want next.

She reflects on her own journey from Applied Mathematics to Qualitative Researcher, and I reflect on Nursing, Physician Associate studies to PhD!

Moving forward does not mean abandoning the destination you hope to reach. It means allowing yourself to begin before the entire route becomes visible.

What opportunity helped you understand where you wanted to go next?

Individual error or system failure, where do you think responsibility sits?

For me, learning about James Reason’s work gave me the motivation to get involved in service through governance and trying to encourage system change for my profession!

By a philosophy of practice, I mean the values, assumptions and theories that shape what we notice, how we make decisions and what we ultimately do—especially when there is no obvious answer.
