β€˜the afterlife of hemlocks’ (printed and beautifully framed by @resolvephoto) is part of this year’s @contemporarycalgary LOOK gala fundraising auction!

This photograph was made in 2025 on Sc’ianew territory, Banana Slug territory, Pacific Wren territory, Western Redcedar territory, and as you can see in the image, Hemlock territory, False Chanterelle territory and Large-leaved Avens territory.
This image was composed while being sung to by Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Varied Thrush, using forest cast-offs, made on site with all materials left in place afterwards. It is a portrait of a little corner of this ecosystem - False Chanterelle is doing its work decomposing the fragment of fallen hemlock, surrounded by other forest floor inhabitants like Avens and Ferns, themselves in varying states of composure/ decomposure. A multitude of tiny insects move through the scene, clearly visible to the camera only when standing still, otherwise leaving little digital footprints in the form of miniature rainbows. All around them on the forest floor, on cushions of moss and drifts of accumulated needles, amid tangles of lichen that travelled down from the canopy with them, hemlock cones hold seeds ready to begin their days.
