If you’re wandering through Montreal and find yourself craving a plate of comfort that feels like a warm hug from Tokyo, Jako is the spot. Their Tonkatsu Curry is a masterclass in texture and balance. @restaurant.jako

The star of the show is undeniably the pork katsu itself. It features a remarkably thick cut of pork that remains juicy on the inside, shielded by a craggy, ultra-crisp panko crust that shatters with every bite without feeling greasy. This is paired with a rich, velvety Japanese-style curry that is deeply savory, carrying signature notes of caramelized onion and a hint of fruitiness to round out the spice.

The perfectly steamed short-grain rice acts as the essential sponge for that heavy gravy, while the sides provide the necessary contrast. You get a fresh crunch from the shredded cabbage, a mild sweetness from the creamy potato salad, and a bright, acidic pop from the red fukujinzuke pickles to cleanse the palate. What makes Jako stand out in the Montreal food scene is the authenticity of the presentation; it’s a faithful, high-quality rendition of a Japanese staple served in a space that feels both modern and intimate.

Just a pro tip: eat the pieces resting on the rice first to enjoy the maximum crunch of the breading before it soaks up too much of that delicious sauce.

We tried a bit of everything and were actually really impressed. The chicken was perfectly crispy, the udon was delicious, and the katsu was on point. Only thing is that the kimchi was a bit salty for me. But overall, such a good experience 🤩❤️ I will definitely come back!!

MTL food dump 🤤
🍩 Bernie Beigne – Tons of flavours. Right across from Alphabet Café.
🍟 La Banquise – Classic poutine perfection. Open 24/7 =late night munchies
🥯 St-Viateur Bagel – An absolute must in MTL. These bagels are unreal.
🍵💖Alphabet Café – The pink drink tasted as good as it looked (so pretty!).
🍜 Restaurant Jako – Best Korean food I’ve had in Montreal + the owners were the sweetest.
🥞 Antipode – Brunch heaven with amazing latte options.
