October 30th | 7pm Brick Lane Bookshop 166 Brick Lane London E1 6RU 🎟️ £6 | LINK IN BIO From the haunting hills of rural Italy to the gritty criminal underworld of Kent, these two master storytellers explore themes of identity, power, myth, and truth in unforgettable style. Expect a lively, thought-provoking discussion as Holloway and Arnott dive into the inspiration behind their books, their creative processes, and the strange, darkly comic, and violent worlds they conjure on the page. Wayne Holloway (Land of Hunger, Bindlestiff, Our Struggle) brings his background in film and philosophy to Commedia Mortale — a surreal and satirical tale steeped in local legend, post-truth, and eccentric village life. Jake Arnott (The Long Firm, He Kills Coppers) returns with Blood Rival — a taut and fast-paced thriller that peels back the layers of crime, corruption, and power in the shadow of the M25. Don’t miss this rare chance to see two distinctive voices in contemporary fiction in conversation — and discover the stories behind the stories. BLOOD RIVAL A dark, fast-paced thriller set on the M25, where Lee Royal — the so-called King of Kent — is killed in a suspected road rage attack. But was it random, or murder driven by long-buried secrets? As his wife Jo, her ambitious admirer Eddie, and corrupt cop Ray Spinks circle the truth, obsession, betrayal, and violence collide in a deadly game for power. Loyalties blur, secrets explode — and no one is safe. COMMEDIA MORTALE Liguria, Italy. In a mountain village, an old farmhouse casts its spell on all who enter. New owners are swept into local chaos—pagan rites, war stories, dreamers, drunks, a talking parrot, asylum-seeking footballers, and, improbably, a visit from Anthony Bourdain. Commedia Mortale is a dark comedy about myth, truth, and finding your place.

Tomorrow night at @noalibisbookstore: COMMEDIA MORTALE – @restlesswaynex is in conversation with @wednesdayerskin and @adrian__duncan__ discussing his recent third novel from Influx Press. October 2 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Tickets are FREE – Link in Bio ABOUT THE BOOK Liguria, Italy. In a mountain village sits an old farmhouse that stores the memories of those who have lived there and suffers the tales of the visitors who come and go. The house weaves its magic on all who encounter it. New owners move in and over time become entangled with a parade of oddball characters. From pagan ritual to the antics of modern village life, the clash between outsiders and locals, Commedia Mortale seeks to understand what is authentic in both: the tall tales of ageing Second World War Partisans, the dreams of a chef to travel to parts unknown supported by a Greek chorus of drunks, a talking parrot, and asylum-seeking footballers with their own dreams, and miraculously a visit to the village by Anthony Bourdain himself. Parsed through the eyes of a film maker, the ultimate outsider, Commedia Mortale summons dreams of kinship and nightmares of enmity. Ranging across philosophy, food, history, love, loss and landscape, Holloway conjures up a unique portrait of a place, the fables of its past and the dilemma of how to live now. Artwork by Ali Holloway Wayne Holloway is a writer and director living in London. After studying Philosophy at the University of Essex in the 1980s he started his career making music videos for the likes of Sinead O Conner, Aswad, and Shane McGowan, before moving into commercials and film work, writing in the margins. He is the author of Bindlestiff (Influx, 2019) and Our Struggle (Influx, 2022). Wendy Erskine is the prize-winning author of two short story collections, Sweet Home and Dance Move. She is a frequent broadcaster and interviewer, and works as a secondary school teacher in Belfast. The Benefactors is her debut novel. Adrian Duncan is an Irish artist and writer. His latest film Latina, Latina (2025) screened in competition at CPH:DOX 2025. His latest novel, The Gorgeous Inertia of the Earth was published earlier this year by Tuskar Rock Press.

Wayne Holloway has a new work out, Commedia Mortale, so I speak to him about it...here goes... How do you think this new work differentiates from the others? definitely a different tone, its written in the style of a fable, or open ended folktales of the 15/14th century italy (and wider europe)..which I think is where the unreliable narrator originates, (I write dos i wont be written about) which is kind of sneaky and has darker undercurrents, I revisit this character in the chapter that features a disgruntled location manager on a Anthony Bourdain episode…I for one am for sure an unreliable narrator.. Were you interacting with anything visual while you were writing this piece? the landscape and topology of the house and the valley which is where the book is set, mainly from memory as i don’t usually write there. Also the artwork of Istvan Laurer that we inherited, and his works i’ve found online, that reflect his obsession with the house itself…also visually the narrowness of a valley compared to the openness of the sea, and the high mountains can be felt in the writing i think.. Your work has a varied approach to it. Sometimes helter skelter, sometimes a slower pace, or sometimes you use cinematic elements to create your World. Is there a through line between all of it? or as the Guardian said: idiosyncratic doesn't begin to get near him? the through line is for me the energy to write through everything, as in both the sense of getting to the other side, the beyond of my own experience, but also to skry, to intuit a sort through what we know, which is how we alls ee the world, so this commonality of telling a story, of seeing the world through what we know, is important. On top of that the idiosyncratic element may be that sometimes I refuse to edit some of the odder things ( in the sense of being non linear, non or even anti narrative) that flow through me when I’m writing, which tempers the direction of narrative but i hope with a cosmic energy that comes from the out there rather than in any pettier machinations of my mind…!
