The processing is blasting today as it’s the 32nd Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the Sega Genesis.

I mentioned a few years back that I got my copy on February 2 of 1994, and overall impressions. From the lead up in magazine coverage, to my Electronics Boutique decking out their window displays and more.

What we didn’t know, or at least most of us, was Sonic 3 was only half the game. Sonic and Knuckles later in the year of 1994 was the complete package locked on to Sonic 3. Plus much later it’s been said the Micheal Jackson worked with Sega on the soundtrack.

But man Sonic 3 was a blast back 32 years ago and to this day!

Happy 32nd Anniversary to Sonic 3 and the blue blur 🔵💨!

A mail call from yesterday, so powering on the Japanese Sega Saturn to dodge some bullets in DoDonPachi, by Cave. My #shmupoftheday for #segasunday.

May have to mark the calendar for yesterday as it’s unofficially DoDonPachi day 😁. Seriously though, fellow #instagamer @retrogames.daniel posted a great #reel on DoDonPachi yesterday. Then yesterday evening my mail carrier pulls up and hands me a package. DoDonPachi arrived.

About a week ago, I received a message from a contact that has a nice collection of retrogames and some imports. I’ve purchased from them on quite a few occasions. The message starts out with, “I think I have something you may want to checkout…”. An import Saturn #shmup most times receive my full attention. A fresh looking copy of DoDonPachi with obi complete. Scanned the multiple photos, and a quick video. Quickly after, it’s was in route to the gameroom.

DoDonPachi is a #bullethell #shooter I first played around 2002. First impressions were very impressed by the graphic detail, the sound(could barely hear, due to the arcade it was in) and the fire power and of course the bullets, LOTS of bullets.

Afterwards, Cave as the shmup company became a business I researched and followed for many years. DoDonPachi is a game and series that many hold high praises in the genre!

Day 9 of #septembershmups and I had to go back in time a bit for a #shmup that when I saw and played for the first time, was shocked and amazed! Today my #shmupoftheday is Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire on the NEC PC Engine CD-ROM2.

Sapphire as most call it, is a marvel on the PC-Engine CD(mini). Utilizing the expanded data of the arcade card, Sapphire demonstrated software scaling and polygon like graphics in game. The CD storage hosted anime cutscenes and voice dialogue.

To go along with the shocking visuals for the time, was a screaming neoclassical type metal soundtrack. The guitar player(s) are metal gods with the speed they are playing.

Playing Sapphire back in the day made me realize why the NEC PC Engjne was such a powerhouse in Japan. The PC Engine back then was known for its #shmups and playing Sapphire is a testament of its #shmup legacy.

Day 6 of #septembershmups and my #shmupoftheday is none other than Guwange, by Cave.

Guwange back in the early 2000’s shocked me. A #shmup and style I’d never seen. A vertical and horizontal scrolling shooter. The Japanese mythologic lore was fascinating. Yokai’s and other horrors are displayed so vividly.

The music is amazing! Ancient Japanese style blended with some modern beats. Some of which are eerily beautiful, like this vocalized arranged version of stage 3 (Underground Cherry Blossoms). First time hearing this track and the laughter of the demons gave me chills.

The story centers on three characters stricken by a curse and are bonded by the Shikigram. A demon like being that attacks and can hold back battle attacks. Shmups generally don’t hold a lot of plot, but Guwange stories for the three selectable characters is interesting, and a bit tragic.

Guwange is a slower paced bullethell. Bullet patterns will fill almost every pixel on screen. Enemy waves are at times massive. Luckily your characters hitbox is very small and weaving through attacks can be manageable. Some of the bosses are visual nightmares.

Guwange is one of my favorite #shooters out there. The integration of Japanese lore and Muromachi era style is a fresh take on the genre.
