💫New thank you card alert 💫
I commissioned @elenareyesstudio for a portrait of me in one of my favorite earrings and she really blew it out of the park. I mean, HOW GORGEOUS!?! I can’t wait to put these new ‘thank you’ cards in your orders 🥺

Charlotte E Ray (January 13, 1850 - January 4, 1911) teacher & lawyer

Ray was born in New York City to parents Charles & Charlotte Ray. Both were adamant that all seven of their children gain an education, thus leading to Ray moving to Washington DC to attend the Institution for the Education of Colored Youth, one of the few places at the time that offered an academic education for African Americans. By 1869, she began her teaching career at Howard University. There, she pursued law, receiving her degree in 1872, and became the first black woman to graduate from an American law school and the third American woman of any race to complete law school.
On April 23, 1872, Ray achieved another first yet again. She was admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia & became the first black woman certified as a lawyer in the United States. Ray opened a practice in Washington DC but was not able to maintain business because of racial prejudices and economic depression, thus leading her to close and move back to New York City in 1879. There, she taught in the public schools for some time. Little is known of her later life, but Ray had already accomplished so much for African American women, paving a pathway for future young lady lawyers to follow. #BLACKHERSTORY
