The Laureate Awards recognise artists whose creativity, dedication and contributions shape our arts and culture, inspiring audiences and future generations. Hear from our trustees on why these artists and their contributions deserve to be celebrated. ✨ “Artists share their stories, lift up communities and amplify the voices of those who have been historically overlooked.” - Hall Cannon “Our arts laureates are leaders. The bold connections they make with the world endure, as does the collective power of their mana.” - Andrea Hammond “A Laureate Award tells an artist publicly that their work matters. It provides unrestricted funding, then gets out of the way. Together our Laureates enlarge how we see ourselves, individually and as a nation.” - Kent Gardner “Without creativity we have no identity. The Laureate Awards allow us to celebrate the brilliance of our artists who in turn make this country the unique place we call home.” - Chelsea Winstanley “A Laureate Award comes out of nowhere. It’s a complete vote of confidence that offers what no other funding can – freedom to create.” - Anne Noble “Seeing the joy and encouragement that our Laureates take from this recognition from their peers; and their renewed motivation and commitment to their craft.” - Tim Clarke “It’s the recognition by peers and the sector of the dedication and energy required to carve out an enduring practice by artists.” - Tanea Heke “Recognising them and backing them with a Laureate Award is one of the most meaningful investments we can make in this country’s future”. - Hamish Edgar Join us this Friday, 16 October, to celebrate the 2026 Laureates.

NYC - you continue to pull at my heart strings, reminding me of living there 30 years ago while working at the Ford Foundation. Grateful for all the friends and relatives from those decades and from around the world whom I saw and hugged (and even sang along with). 💞🙏🏾

“[…] Rani’s sculptural forms are placed alongside works by Tony Fomison and Reuben Paterson, where volcanic landscapes, deep time and creation narratives become entangled. Accompanied by the newly commissioned immersive soundscape H-75-HE-25—a title referencing hydrogen and helium, the elemental composition of the universe following the Big Bang—the space collapses geological, cosmological and human histories into a shared sensory encounter. Fomison’s lifelong engagement with volcanic landscapes, Māori archaeology and the stories embedded within geological formations finds a material dialogue with Paterson’s shimmering evocations of the Piha landscape, where volcanic sand and light become originators and influence […]” Read Dina Jezdić’s curatorial essay on our website. @reuben_paterson Reuben Paterson show now available to stream on Apple Podcasts and Mixcloud! On this episode of the Selection Committee Radio Show I am joined by the fabulous artist Reuben Paterson (Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tūhourangi, Scottish). Born and raised in New Zealand, he now lives and works in New York City, to the great delight of those who know him here. For our enjoyment, Paterson brings us an all-Kiwi playlist that begins with the call of the kiwi bird itself. We discuss his Māori heritage in detail—from the story of how people originally arrived in New Zealand to development of his own family tree to the explosion of Māori history and culture back into the mainstream. Paterson grew up on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, a place of sparkling black sand and shining waters—a lucky boy in a glittering landscape. He traces his lifelong fascination with crystals, sequins, and most especially glitter back to those early days. He is best known for his spectacular use of colored glitter in paintings, sculptures, and videos. Paterson’s work explores the way that light interacts with scintillating surfaces and connects with landscape, memory, and the stars. With pieces ranging from monumental public sculpture and land art to intimate paintings, Paterson navigates the spaces between the sacred and the profane. Through pattern, personal history, and fantasy, Paterson creates a world of shimmering intensity. Our conversation is a crash course in a unique, queer, Māori point of view—and not to be missed!
