Our annual community processional takes place next weekend 🖤

Together we honor the shared weight of sorrow through movement, music, and ritual. Rooted in collective care, this gathering invites participants to walk together in remembrance, solidarity, and the sacred act of grieving in public.

Grief does not look the same for everyone. It may be expressed through silence, song, movement, tears, conversation, prayer, art, memory, or simply the choice to show up. This gathering welcomes the full range of those experiences. We invite people of all ages, racial and cultural identities, genders, sexualities, faiths, abilities, and relationships to loss. We welcome you wherever you are in your grief, whether it is silent and still, or loud and moving.

We ask everyone to help create a space where grief is treated with dignity.

What does it mean to wear your grief?

For some, it may be a patch with a name or phrase. It may be a loved one’s shirt, jewelry, or another treasured object. It may be a color, a texture, flowers, handmade adornments, or something that only makes sense to you. It might mean symbols like tears, religious iconography, beings from nature, etc.

There is no single right way to express grief—and you do not need to wear anything at all. Your grief may be visible, subtle, private, changing, or beyond words.

For this year’s Carrying Our Grief community processional, we re-invite you to wear or carry what your grief calls for, with care for the cultures and traditions that are not your own. Draw from your own memories, relationships, and experiences rather than imitating sacred symbols or mourning practices from another community. Draw from the brilliance of the many expressions of grief we have witnessed and worn together in year’s past.

Join us October 17 from 1–3 p.m. at Race Street Pier in Philadelphia. Rain date: October 18.

“singing’s made of sweat and spittle,
tears and snot, hot breath,
and the soggy crumb of a potato chip left
in a back corner of your unflossed tooth.
They can extract salt from seawater
and alcohol from beer, but a song can’t live
without the human body—
lungs, ribcage, naked heart—
or the panting hound dog
of a life that cries inside.” ~ Alison Luterman

There’s always space for the wild, the messy, the quaking, the too-long-swallowed cries that yearn for release, what lives in the tender silence you keep and everything in between at Singing Our Grief.

You don’t need a practiced, polished voice — only the ache you carry and the longing to be in community as we bring our breaking hearts to this altar of song and sound.

Join us @chestnuthillunitedchurch from 7-8:30 pm Friday, July 17.

The church is at 8812 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia.

Cost: $10-$30 sliding scale. (Venmo to Naila-Francis or cash - no one turned away for lack of funds)

There is street parking available as well as a small parking lot behind the church. You may also park across the street at the Women’s Health Center.

All griefs are welcome, from the personal to the collective.

“Grief is the downpour your soul has been thirsting for. Because what remains hidden for too long doesn’t change. It is calcified in place, often sealed by shame, left untouched and forgotten by time. But when it can finally come into the open to be seen, it is exposed to new conditions and it begins to move. It rises on a salty geyser of tears, sometimes sung to the surface by a terrific moan, streaming down our cheeks until it moistens the soil where we stand, preparing us for new growth.

“…Indeed, when something stuck can be released through grief, we are freeing up a greater capacity to love.” ~ Toko-pa Turner

Join us this Juneteenth for a collective downpour to create more space for love and freedom as Singing Our Grief joins @roomforgriefphl @cherrystreetpier We are so looking forward to being part of this beautiful immersive art and performance space that pays tribute to grief.

We couldn’t let May end without marking 5 years of tending this communal altar of grief.

Of normalizing and reclaiming this natural human expression as sacred.

Of making beauty from the many threads weaving our broken hearts together.

Of singing and praising and dancing and processing and ritualizing and disrupting and softening and wailing and carrying this grief together.

Of honoring the path of grieving as soulful liberatory work.

Some of the faces have changed since we first gathered on the full moon in Scorpio five years ago to dream into this work together but we are who we are because of everyone who’s been a part of our collective heart.

We’re so thankful for all of our friends and collaborators who’ve joined us on this journey including @thethreadphilly @thresholdcollective_ @opbarks @rootwithmichelle @chestnuthillunitedchurch @phillygoatproject @phillypaganpride @philatheatreco and the Philadelphia Threshold Singers.

And to all of you who’ve brought us your tears, your rage, your tenderness, your longing, your humanity, we couldn’t be more honored to hold this space for you.

See you all @roomforgriefphl @cherrystreetpier for Singing Our Grief on June 19th.

We’re thrilled to bring you Singing Our Grief next month from @cherrystreetpier as part of the incredible immersive art and performance experience @roomforgriefphl

Join us at 7 pm on Friday, June 19th (Juneteenth) to move our sorrows through song, as we gather to weave the sounds of our broken hearts together.

Communal singing through grief invites us to meet the tender, raw, lost and lonely parts of ourselves and each other with compassion and empathy. Giving our grief sound collectively creates space for us to shed the shame, the judgment, the fear we may feel around expressing our grief out loud, as we honor this natural human experience of responding to loss. As our hearts soften and open upon the waves that carry our voices.

We can’t wait to join you on the water (a generous ally in helping us metabolize our grief) as part of this beautiful event.

“Room for Grief: Living with Loss in America” explores the many facets of loss and grief that impact us both personally and collectively through art, film, performance and multidisciplinary works, inviting us to envision a world where grief isn’t stigmatized and isolating but connective and liberating.

We invite you to explore the entire range of events being offered, including Singing Our Grief, from 7-8:30 pm June 19.

📍 Cherry Street Pier Gallery
🪷 Opening Reception: June 5, 2026, from 4-10pm
🪷 Events all throughout the month
🪷 Closing Ritual: June 28, 2026, 7-8pm

Deep gratitude to @chelsea_does_it for inviting us to be part of this communal container.

Good morning, irresistible singing resisters ❤️‍🔥 We are still so filled up from weaving all of our voices together and the energy and spirit we created. THANK YOU to the 75 people who showed up and made this powerful night of song possible.

Together we also raised a total of $1,664.36 for @vamos_juntos_ !! These funds will go towards Juntos’ organizing work to support families and communities who have been impacted by ICE raid, as well as continued efforts to organize for immigrant justice. If you didn’t get to give last night and still want to contribute, you can donate at GoFundMe.com/srphilly.

A huge thanks to our song leaders for bringing stories, lineages & soul medicine to the space. @reverendrhetta @alhalpal @sterlingduns @samantharise @chanarothman_music @dancingmobot @krodmannn @rachel.chang.395

Thank you to @noicephilly, @koltzedek & our volunteers for collaborating on this.

And to all of you for being a part of this singing movement. Until we sing again, in practice and in the streets, soon. 💕

“So much of our life force is locked up in the resistance to grief, the avoidance of grief. And there is no true happiness, there is certainly no true joy, I don’t think, if we shut off the lower register of grief. When that lower register is open, when we can drop into that and hear the resonant bell of that deep place…hearing the joyful chorus join in, that becomes possible.” - Francis Weller

Joy is always optional at Singing Our Grief yet time and again we experience the movement toward joy when we give our sorrows voice, allow them unfiltered expression on a current of sound.

What might be possible for you, what might be you be given access to —lightness, vitality, breath, a sense of belonging, a reminder of your worthiness — if you allowed yourself to touch your grief while being held in community?

Join us this Friday. Your broken heart, and all it carries, from the personal to the collective, is always welcome here.
