Always a pleasure working for the wonderful Literary Review of Canada! And an especially fun time when it’s a cover I’ve been assigned to draw. Editor Kyle Wyatt and I had a chat over some pints a while back, and chatting about our lives and interests ended up leading to the idea for this cover. Summarized, the brief Kyle gave me was: a visual love letter to the printed word and the tech that made it possible. Instantly my mind went to my time working at @hatchshowprint in Nashville. I designed posters and operated antique printing presses every day for about 2 years in a 130+ year old letterpress shop that was frequently described as “a living museum”. The workhorse of the shop is a Meihle 29, a printing press capable of spitting out thousands of sheets an hour. It’s about the size of a minivan, and usually takes two operators to run it. When running it looks rather Wonka-esque. I felt like this piece of machinery featuring two (of the many) talented printers who showed me the ropes at Hatch, was a great way to hit the brief. Sorry I couldn’t include all my Hatch Show Print mentors in this illustration, there’s a lot of you! But Dan Brown, the now ~90 (and just recently retired) press operator who had been running the machine since the 1980s, and @lordymercy , one of the sharpest printmakers/musicians/banana-pudding-bakers I’ve ever met who embodies everything good about Tennessee, felt like an excellent representation of where the tradition and function of these machines overlap with and begin to make way for the art and the printmaking revival. If you’re still with me after all this, I got one thing to say! Go buy a book, go buy a print, go buy a magazine! Touch things, keep them, and think about all of the people with specialized skills and niche passions who had to work together in order to bring such a thing into existing. Thanks to LRC and Kyle for having me on board for this one, and thanks to Hatch for the many lessons learned during a time in my life when I truly needed all of them!
