As a Historian who gets to travel frequently, I am really happy to share wonderful examples of interpretation in my home state of New Jersey. During my recent visit to The Museum of Cape May County, I was shown this amazing painting titled Dinah's View. This reminded me of my own Revolutionary ancestor, James Forten, who was 16 years old during this time. So it's wonderful to see this history from an African-American woman's perspective.

This commissioned painting by artist Laura McPherson depicts the Battle of Delaware Bay of April 8, 1782, as seen through the eyes of Dinah Berry, a Black woman who, at the age of approximately 90, reported to a census taker in 1850 that she witnessed the battle firsthand.

The 1850 Census documents this in the column beside her name and age: "saw the fight between the Hyder Ally and General Monk." The archives state that the ensuing combat in Delaware Bay near Cape May ended with the American sloop Hyder Ally capturing the British sloop-of-war HMS General Monk. A victory for the Americans against the British forces.

Dinah's account was recorded nearly 70 years after the event but is proof that the experiences of African Americans are part of the broader narratives of American history. As an observer during this moment in time and her detailed recollection years later, we are able to fill in historical silences by centering Dinah's testimony through interpretation such as art.

Thanks to Bobbi Hornbeck, Vice President of the @cmc_museum muse for introducing me to this amazing story and artist!

Please visit the museum to see this painting and other historical artifacts covering maritime, shipbuilding, coastal trade, and photographic history of Cape May County.

Artist Laura McPherson is a West Cape May native. She has a B.A. degree in painting from Stockton University.

This work was made possible by the New Jersey Council on the Arts, @newjerseydos, the @neaarts, and the Cape May County Board of Commissioners through the Division of Culture and Heritage.

THURSDAY, 10/15 (6pm) — Fall Lecture Series: Arthur S. Lefkowitz at the Old Barracks Museum (101 Barrack Street) in Trenton, NJ.

The Fall Lecture Series opens on October 15th, where author Arthur S. Lefkowitz. Lefkowitz will discuss his book, “George Washington’s Dilemma.”

“George Washington’s Dilemma” tackles the story of the French volunteers who helped win American independence. Volunteers were commissioned as officers in the Continental Army, and some had become great assets to General Washington, while others were frauds who came to America to make money.

Arthur Lefkowitz is an independent researcher specializing in the American Revolution. Arthur has a laudable reputation for tackling offbeat but interesting aspects of Our War for Independence that present a research challenge. He has published nine books to date on unique subjects including Colonel Arron Burr’s impressive Revolutionary War service, the American Turtle Submarine, and George Washington’s brilliant defense of New Jersey’s Watchung Mountains. Arthur’s education includes a BA from New York University and an MBA from Long Island University. He lives in New Jersey, which is accurately depicted as the Crossroads of the American Revolution.

Lectures will begin at 6 PM at the Old Barracks Museum, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be available. Copies of these titles are available for purchase in-store or at www.barracks.org. All proceeds go towards supporting the Old Barracks Museum and its mission.

Thank you to our Series Sponsor, the Society of the Sons of the Revolution in New Jersey, and our Community Sponsor, Hunter Research.
