2026 Chicago Marathon. ❤️🏃‍♀️

The idea to run the Chicago Marathon while fundraising for The Molly Hahn and Rebecca Pflueger Memorial Fund, supporting the Hahn-Pflueger Brain Cancer Scholars Program at Notre Dame’s Harper Cancer Research Institute, came together after being inspired by a couple of different people.

My original fundraising goal was $4,100. I was honestly nervous at first — I like to know what’s coming and be prepared, so my brain immediately went to: How am I supposed to raise all of this money?

But little by little, people showed up. Within about 3–4 months, I had already reached my original goal, and from there the fundraiser kept growing.

I also ran in support of @the_abta and the American Brain Tumor Association, giving me another way to support the broader brain tumor community. 🎗️

I tried to find little ways to connect personally with Molly and Rebecca. When I met Dr. Noah Hahn, one thing that stayed with me was hearing that Molly had been a pet sitter when they first met. As a full-time pet sitter myself, that small connection meant a lot.

Throughout training, I wore two pins on my running vest — a brain cancer awareness ribbon and a butterfly. Rebecca loved butterflies, and now whenever I see one, I think of her. 🦋

Those pins became a little ritual. At the beginning of runs, during hard miles, and even during the marathon, I would touch them and remind myself why I was doing this and who I was doing it for.

Sometimes: We’ve got this, Basia.

Other times: We’ve got this, ladies — thinking of Molly and Rebecca.

Training wasn’t always glamorous: early mornings, long runs, tired legs, and plenty of St. Louis summer heat.

One phrase I kept coming back to was: “Pain is a privilege.”

I’m incredibly fortunate to have my health and a body that allows me to run. When a run felt hard, I reminded myself that if Molly and Rebecca could endure everything they faced with brain cancer, I could get through a difficult training run.

That didn’t make every mile easy, but it gave those miles purpose.

🧠 Beneficiary Spotlight: The Molly Hahn and Rebecca Pflueger Memorial Fund, supporting the Hahn-Pflueger Brain Cancer Scholars Program at Notre Dame’s Harper Cancer Research Institute

What began as a deeply personal response to loss has grown into a lasting legacy of research, opportunity and hope.

In October 2020, Dr. Noah Hahn and Rex Pflueger established the Molly Hahn and Rebecca Pflueger Memorial Fund after both of their families were profoundly affected by glioblastoma. The fund was created to honor Molly Hahn and Rebecca Pflueger while supporting the next generation of students pursuing medicine and cancer research.

In 2022, the Hahn-Pflueger Brain Cancer Scholars Program welcomed its first class of summer research interns. Since then, the program has continued to grow.

This past summer, the program welcomed its fifth and largest class yet, with six Notre Dame undergraduates completing 8–10 week cancer research internships at research institutions and programs in Galway, Ireland; at the University of Pennsylvania; in Baltimore; in Indianapolis; at City of Hope in Los Angeles; and at Notre Dame.

These experiences give students the opportunity to work alongside researchers and physicians, gain hands-on exposure to cancer research and build a foundation for future careers in medicine and scientific discovery.

What began in memory of Molly and Rebecca continues to create opportunities for the next generation while carrying their legacies forward through research, education and hope. 💙🦋

Through Rivalry for Hope, we are proud to support this important work.

Somethings are bigger than football and this is one of them.

Rivalry for Hope is a movement that has brought together two icon Universities, their alumni networks and fan bases, all because of the story of Rex Pflueger, former ND Basketball Player and Class of 2019, and his brother, Devon who is a USC Alum. 7 years ago, their mother, Rebecca Pflueger died of brain cancer.

This Ignaural Golf Tournament between USC and Notre Dame is to bring awareness and raise money to find a cure for Brain Cancer.

The proceeds from the tournament will go to both the USC Brain Tumor Center at Keck Medicine at USC and the Hahn-Pflueger Brain Cancer Scholar Program at Notre Dame.

The more awareness there is, and the more money that is raised, will put it one step closer to finding a cure.

If your interested in participating as part of a 4some in the tournament or you want to be a sponsor or you just want to donate to this cause please visit rivalryforhope.com.

What would you fight for?

Go Irish! Beat Brain Cancer!
