CPCRS Reflections: Looking Back to Move Forward

Dr. Kwesi Daniels (@kwesi_daniels)

African American historic sites are often safeguarded by everyday people who may not be formally trained as preservationists, yet they continue to protect marginalized histories through sheer dedication and deep personal ties to these places.

In his conversations with Dr. Randall Mason (@rfmason) and Dr. Amber N. Wiley (@profwiley), Dr. Kwesi Daniels (@kwesi_daniels) explores the meaning of stewardship within the Black preservation movement and reflects on the partnership between Tuskegee University and the University of Pennsylvania, especially the work of the Center for the Preservation of Civil Rights Sites (@civilrightsites).

How do you care for a living memorial?

Last week, our team visited the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC, one of our current project sites. We are authoring a Cultural Landscape Report for this relatively young memorial, now 13 years old, to help guide its long-term stewardship.

Working in partnership with @kofiboone and @ncstatelaep, we joined @nationalmallnps and @nps for conversations on current challenges, including climate change, tidal inundation, soil compaction from heavy visitation, and even rodent management. We also discussed opportunities to enhance interpretation, allowing visitors to connect more deeply with the memorial’s design, inscriptions, and landscape context.

Over the coming months, our @urbanheritageproject team—@rfmason @jtorke @buildingghosts—will be developing a treatment plan to support the continued care and interpretation of this important site.

Swipe through for photos from our visit!

EVENT ALERT! Join the Urban Heritage Project from the University of Pennsylvania's Weitzman School of Design for "Conversations in Cultural Landscape Preservation," a series of three virtual conversations setting the stage for an in-person symposium (November 14-15, 2024) at the University of Pennsylvania.

For this first event, independent author and photographer Laura Alice Watt (@lawatt ) will be in conversation with Randy Mason (@rfmason ) of the Urban Heritage Project.

The practice of cultural landscape preservation presents big opportunities to expand the reach of preservation. Cultural landscape thinking reckons with the complexity of places continuing to evolve through time and space, and challenges professionals to bring historical, scientific, social, and design intelligence to bear on the future of these places. As both an established idea and as a critical means of reform, cultural landscape ideas and practices deserve deeper exploration. This series of virtual events – and the symposium that follows in November – convenes a range of practitioners, scholars, and policy makers to examine the impact and the potential of cultural landscape work. We invite you to join these ongoing conversations about realizing the potential of cultural landscape as a preservation, creative, and social practice.

Our May 1 conversation with scholar Laura Alice Watt explores her book, "The Paradox of Preservation: Wilderness and Working Landscapes at Point Reyes National Seashore," to understand the potentials and limits of cultural landscape concepts and applications. This case raises questions about a range of preservation, design, and policy issues actively contested in managed landscapes everywhere.

Register at the link in bio / link in stories.

These talks will be recorded and posted on the UHP website: www.cultural-landscapes.org.

Urban Heritage Project works on a variety of cultural landscape and preservation projects. Associated with @pennpraxis and @weitzman_preservation , UHP leads two groups of projects: 1️⃣preservation-centered planning projects, and 2️⃣partnership projects with the @nationalparkservice .

1️⃣ UHP's planning projects are managed via PennPraxis, and mostly date to the period when Randy Mason (@rfmason) was PennPraxis' executive director. These include work on Rwanda genocide memorials, NYC Parks’ North Brother Island, a multi-year Civic Infrastructure research initiative, and a Philadelphia-wide survey of historic sacred places in which Molly Lester (@buildingghosts) and Ashley Hahn (@ajaxworks) played leading roles.

2️⃣ NPS partnership projects make up most of UHP’s work these days. We’ve done 30+ projects in 12 years, with 6 more underway. Randy had worked on a few NPS projects in the 2000s, but we started in earnest when the Parks for the People (PftP) initiative launched in 2010-11 by NPS, Van Alen, etc. PftP created a remarkable series of conferences + a competition for design studios working on national park sites. @weitzman_school was a finalist, creating a massive set of proposals for the Civil War Defenses of Washington (19 sites ringing the DC core).

NPS’ National Capital Region offered an initial landscape project for one of the Civil War forts in 2012, and we’ve kept growing the partnership since then. NPS staff have been amazing partners, offering significant design, planning, and preservation challenges while supporting our research interests. Today, UHP staff + interns work across the National Capital and Northeast regions; our many projects are chronicled at www.cultural-landscapes.org (link in bio). Follow UHP here to learn more about our projects, our research initiatives, and our upcoming Fall 2024 symposium.
