A new feature on my work has just been published by Rfotofolio.

“However much you try to explain a “river” by scooping water into your hands, the water is gone in an instant. So I stopped trying to explain the river through the water I had scooped up, and looked instead at the water itself. I realized that the river flowing before my eyes was simply a river.” Shinya Masuda

I’m honored to be featured in the ‘Where We Work’ series on Rfotofolio.org.

It was a pleasure to reflect on the spaces where I live and work, and the quiet rhythms of a studio devoted to light, atmosphere, and looking.

My heartfelt thanks to Constance and Jerry Rosenthal for the invitation and their thoughtful questions.

Congratulations to Donna Gordon (@donnagordon8994), interdisciplinary artist and writer and the 2025 Denis Roussel Award Winner through Rfotofolio (@rfotofolio)

Gordon’s submission featured a series of exquisite photogravure portraits of women situated within the natural world, evoking contemporary visions of Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Juror Christopher James praised the work, writing, “This body of work is grounded in myth and meaning and is a satisfying experience for me as a visitor to the work.”

The Rfotofolio Denis Roussel Award is an annual international photography award established in 2018 to honor the legacy of photographer, educator, and alternative process pioneer Denis Roussel.

Organized through Rfotofolio, the award celebrates photographers working with historical and alternative photographic processes. Rfotofolio is an independent online photography platform and community dedicated to supporting contemporary lens-based artists through exhibitions, interviews, portfolio features, education, and artist opportunities.

Visit the link in bio or www.lenscratch.com to read an interview with the artist and the founders of Rfotofolio.

Humble thanks to rfotofolio and juror Melanie Walker for designating Atrium Corridor as a Work of Merit.

This image is part of Through Awakening Eyes a portrait of the long abandoned Ellis Island Immigration Hospital.

Intrigued by the feeling of an immigrant’s first, sleep-filled glimpse of a new world, I sought to capture the hospital as if seen through “first morning, just awakened eyes” - that moment between sleep and awake, where reality is a hazy soft blend of muted color, light, and shadow. My aim was to portray the hospital as a visual metaphor for this profound, but beautiful, disorientation.

Congratulations to my fellow honorees. I am honored to have my work shown along side yours.
