$COMMENT FRACTIONAL FOR THE FULL POST 🎙️ Doing fractional work in the last year has cost me more energy and money than I expected, and it’s not because of the work itself. It’s because there’s no transparency on how this kind of career actually works. How to structure contracts, what kinds of fractional roles exist, what people charge, what you should charge. Which is why I loved my chat with Rachel Gogel. Rachel is a fractional design leader (ex-Meta, NYT, GQ), working with global organisations like Airbnb and Dropbox, and one of the very few senior creatives bringing radical transparency to this work. Every year she publishes what she calls Contractor Wrapped on LinkedIn (which is seriously the best thing I’ve seen there), where she breaks down her rates, hours per client, gross and net income, all of it.$

LOOK IT’S ME! @hey.curio @theskinnymag @glasgowschoolart

(& lot’s of other good eggs!☀️)

Not only did I have a lovely, sunny bank holiday Sunday, but I also got to see my wee name up on the Merchant City walls!

Working Space live is happening June 3rd, and I’ll be speaking in @hey.curio section, guest hosted by @anupajoshy (my fellow @scottishdesignawards nominee!!)

It’s a PechaKucha format, which means I have 20 slides & 20 seconds per slide. So, yeah. That’ll be interesting 🤣

Let me know if I’ll be seeing you there!

Last month, I started reading ”We Need Your Art: Stop Messing Around and Make Something” by Amie McNee (@inspiredtowrite) at the same time that I was stuck in a familiar procrastination/perfectionism spiral. The premise of the challenge is: Choose a bare minimum of creative output and do it daily for two weeks.

And honestly—it worked so well. For someone whose comics tend to sprawl and quickly become a Big Overwhelming Project, it was nice to remember that comics can be quick, easy, and fun if I let them.

You can read the full post via Substack—link in my bio — and I’ll be posting the rest of the comics this week!

#weneedyourart #dailycomics #substackcomics #parisbd #parislife

$It’s just under one month until the fantastic Rachel Gogel will be joining us to give a talk on ‘Breaking the Grid’. We’d love it if you could join us - online or in-person – it’s one you won’t want to miss! 14 May St Bride Foundation/Online via Zoom Doors/bar 6.15pm | Talk 7–8.30pm (BST) Ticket link in bio! Every designer studies the grid before they learn to break it. For Rachel Gogel, that principle has guided more than layouts – it’s defined her career. After years managing creative departments across media and tech, Rachel stepped away from full-time employment in 2020 to launch her own independent practice. Since then, success manifests as a harmonious blend of consulting, teaching, mentoring, speaking, and advocacy – activities that allow her to spread optimism and create impact while making a living. Whether she’s partnering with clients or nurturing her students in the classroom, she focuses on craft and collaboration to shape the invisible systems that dictate how organizations evolve. Working with global companies and mission-driven initiatives in a fractional capacity, Rachel embeds deeply with teams to unlock human potential and navigate brands through seismic shifts in culture. Now she’s challenging another convention – the belief that growth always means scaling up. She recently left San Francisco at the height of the AI boom to return to her childhood city of Paris, trading the linear climb for something more cyclical: seasons of intensity balanced with intentional rest. If you question the expectations you’ve inherited, this honest talk explores what happens when you stop following someone else’s blueprint and start designing your time with purpose. Rachel (she/her) is an independent creative executive and design educator working at the intersection of brand, culture, and technology. She’s held influential roles at @meta, @nytimes, and @gq, and since founding her own practice in 2020, has collaborated with organizations like @airbnb, @dropbox, and @chickeneggfilms. Named one of @creativboom’s “20 designers inspiring us in 2025,” she defines success as a harmonious blend of consulting, teaching, speaking, mentoring, and advocacy.$
