Is it Adventure Travel or “REAL LIFE”?

All through the trip @rgshalom shouted out "this is REAL LIFE" anytime we did something completely out of our city people blinds. But it really got me thinking... What kind of travel did we do on tho inaugural trip?

For our first official trip to Colombia’s Pacific coast with tourists we took a boat, commonly referred to as a lancha, from Buenaventura to Timbiquí.

As the trip organizer, I made the intentional choice to have our guests travel to Timbiquí the way most people get to and from their home town throughout the year: by the sea.

We started with a 3 hour journey by car to Buenaventura from Cali, then embarked on our lancha to start heading south through the Pacific Ocean.

This is a rough journey traveling to Timbiquí, and smooth on the return to Buenaventura. We sat in a row of US folks and 1 Caleña for a 3 hour boat ride where we felt as though we were taming the waves of the Pacific Ocean as ourselves (instead of the boat driver). We navigated through the choppy December sea going south, and felt the bumps and turns with the rest of the boat’s passengers.

I worried if the motion sickness pills were strong enough once one of our travelers started feeling woozy, we held on for a few hours until we entered the mouth of the Timbiquí River. We calmed naturally and took in the scenery.

Despite the rough ride, both our travelers (who had never taken such extensive trips via boat before) said they appreciated the opportunity to experience how people move around the region and wouldn't change that part of the trip.

With their feedback, I came to know that our entire trip is really geared for travelers who are ok with nitty gritty, “real life” experiences.

When I think about the challenge of marketing this itinerary, I wonder if it was because I had no clue what category to label it or who to market it to?

How do we describe travel that leans off the beaten path for a tourist, but is a completely normal experience for locals?

Based on the journey I described here, would you call this kind of experience “adventure travel”, or something completely different?

This year I FAILED at sales for yet another adult group trip 🥴

Selling "See the Culture Up Close," in collaboration with @alborada_de_timbiqui a trip to a rural town in Colombia: Timbiquí Cauca, was no easy feat!

My marketing plan was not well organized, and I set myself up for failure because I didn't believe in my ability to sell this kind of trip if I couldn't even sell a trip to the city of Cali!

I got a phone call mid October from a member of Alborada asking, "Amiga, ¿Y como vamos en las ventas?" And I had nothing useful to say.

For the first time, I was trusted with the responsibility of finding clients, and someone actually expected me to deliver clients! All my other failed sales attempted, no one EXPECTED me to make sales, so it was a personal failure instead of a failure that affected the collective.

Rural and far away terrain, in a post-conflict recovering community -- I owe so much of my love of Colombia to Timbiquí Cauca, but I had no clue how to communicate how important the place is to me.

So I failed, with a crappy marketing plan, inconsistent posts on social media, and a lack of content to post.

Although I failed, there was so much beauty on the other side of this failure. I got to go back to a town that I know and love, and bring 2 amazing travelers with me!

Despite the poor sales, we did something amazing. Can't wait to share more about the experience we had with @alborada_de_timbiqui from our trip to Timbiquí, Cauca, Colombia!

Working with other black youth is ALWAYS a pleasure oyó

*p.s.* cam corded everything, documentary soon come 📹
