SWIMMING UPDATE 🏊‍♂️😂

Still my weakest discipline.

Still the one I’ve got the most work to do on.

Still, if we’re being completely honest…

pretty fucking shit.

But every week I’m getting a little more comfortable.

A little less tense.
A little more rhythmic.
A little less like I’m actively trying to fight the entire swimming pool.

And that feels like real progress.

Today wasn’t even one of my best sessions. My legs were still tired, I started to lose the rhythm towards the end and I called it before the quality got worse.

But compared to where I started?

It’s night and day.

I’m genuinely starting to feel like I’m learning how to swim rather than just trying not to sink. 😂

A massive part of that is down to @rh.tri .

He’s absolutely brilliant at what he does and somehow manages to explain things in a way that actually makes sense to me. Each week another part just clicks. Only a million more to go 😂

Which is very useful, because he swims like a fucking dolphin…

…and I still swim like someone has thrown a brick into the pool and shouted:

“GOOD LUCK.” 😂

He reckons a 1:30 Ironman swim at Tenby next year is achievable if I keep progressing at the rate I am now.

That still sounds completely mental to me when I think back to my first solo swim and struggling to get through two lengths.

But that’s the point of all this.

Keep turning up.
Keep learning.
Keep getting a tiny bit better.

Still shit.

Just significantly less shit than I was a few weeks ago. 😂👊

14 seconds is all it took - One of the closest Aquabike World Championship battles we’ve seen.

Saturday saw over 440 aquabikers from 29 countries take to the start line in Pontevedra for the Aquabike Standard Distance World Championships.

There appears to have been very little to complain about regarding the event itself, so let’s get into the racing.

Men’s race

Ivan RUBIO RUBIRA came out of the water first in 19:13, followed by Brit Ross HOSKING and eventual winner, Spaniard Victor GUTIERREZ GARCIA.

Victor competed the bike course in an incredible 55:59, the fastest split of the field, allowing him to take the win. Ross came in second, clocking a bike split of 56:09, meaning only 14 seconds separated the top two male finishers.

This was Victor’s aquabike debut, and Ross has only completed one event previously - quite the debut World Champs appearances.

Britain’s Sam HOLWILL came out of the water a couple of minutes behind the lead men, but with a 57:48 bike split, rode himself into 3rd place. He finished just 10 seconds ahead of Frank ERK who himself put down an incredible 56:03 bike split.

Women’s Race

Dominated by Kerry HICKSON. The Aquabike.World number 1 produced the fastest swim (21:04) and bike (1:02:39) splits in the women’s field to take the win in a convincing fashion.

In the swim, Kerry was closely followed by Hayley DAVIS who was just 1 second behind her, and Andrea DAMIANI.

Stephanie OECHSNER rode a 1:03:31 bike split to get herself into second place overall, and Andrea DAMIANI took third place.

More incredible performances

Andrea NIGHTINGALE took the title in the 65-69 AG, equalling the record for World Championship titles at 6, and the International Championship titles at 12.

Blair SAUNDERS won the 60-64 AG, equalling the men’s World Championship title record of 5.

Tommy NIELSEN took his 14th international medal, and Frank ERK his 8th international title - a male athlete record.

FIRST MEDALS

For Malta and Greece in Ryan MUSCAT and Christos GAREFIS.

OVERALL TABLE

GB dominate, followed by the US and Spain.

SWIMMING!?!? 🏊‍♂️😂

Without question my weakest of the three disciplines — and probably the one I’m dreading the most.

But… we’re making progress.

I’m now getting in the pool at least twice a week, alongside my 1:1 sessions with @rh.tri every 2–3 weeks. With his race season almost finished, we should be able to get those sessions a little more regular too.

And slowly, very slowly…

I’m starting to feel comfortable in the water.

Let’s not get this twisted.

I’m still absolutely shit.

BUT… I’m comfortable being shit. 😂

And I actually think that’s quite an important step.

A few months ago I was making excuses in my own head before I’d even left the house because I genuinely didn’t want to go swimming.

Now I turn up knowing full well I might spend half the session clinging to a float, kicking my legs and wondering how everyone else makes this look so bloody easy.

But I turn up.

I’ve got 4 coaching sessions left in this block and another 16 already booked after that.

Hopefully somewhere within those next 20 sessions I’ll unlock the apparently mythical ability to swim more than two lengths without needing a small holiday afterwards. 😂

Until then…

I’ll keep turning up.

Board in hand.
Tow float attached.
Goggles on.

Looking like someone has thrown a brick into the pool and is waiting to see whether it eventually learns to swim.

One day that brick has to swim 2.4 miles. 😭😂

Plenty of work to do.

Project Ironman rolls on. 👊

Wishing my 🚨🚨SPONSORED ATHLETE🚨🚨 @rh.tri the very best of luck when he travels to Pontevedra, Spain for the World Aquabike Championships.

He will be representing @heathwoodtriclub and @heathwoodswimming when he takes on his first attempt in the Standard distance World Championships, a 1500m swim and 40km bike, after qualifying in first place in his race in Birmingham earlier this year.

Best of luck Ross!! Smash it buddy!!
