Now, I'm no music critic, gig reviewer or musician. I can play just enough guitar to annoy your parents while they watch telly downstairs, hammering out Smoke on the Water for the hundredth time and imagining I'll one day be great.

Even now, a little part of me reckons that, with the right people in a room, I could be part of something born of Bob Dylan. Trouble is, I never practised enough. Hence the paintbrush in my hand rather than a pick.

But I digress.

On Friday night, I was one of perhaps 40 fortunate people to see Rhett Miller of the Old 97's play an intimate acoustic show in Gardiner, New York.

I hate enormous gigs where you pay to watch your favourite artist on a screen, separated by thousands of heads. This was the opposite: front row, just feet away from an extraordinary talent.

I can't imagine anything more daunting than standing alone in a small room, every eye fixed on you, expected to entertain everyone on their Friday night. Yet Rhett didn't just entertain us; he made the room come alive.

One man. One guitar. Songs that once existed only in his head. Isn't that mad? A bloke sits around thinks on words and noises, puts them in a particular order, and suddenly a roomful of strangers are hanging on every word. There's something rather beautiful about that.

Between the brilliant songs came stories and anecdotes that had us laughing almost as much as applauding. It felt less like a concert and more like a group of friends listening to someone play.

If you get the chance to see him, grab a ticket. A great songwriter, a fantastic performer and a wonderful night.

And, of course, I made sure he got the guitar I'd painted for him. He was over the moon!

Quite literally. (Get it? The guitar has him standing in front of the moon. Look at the photos.)

Love ya,
William Huntingdon
