POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Thank you so much to @conversationswithkara for tagging me in this! 🤍 Please go check out her post too because her picks are incredible. and yes, I own some of them too so I wanted to switch things up a little and share a different set of recommendations.

I also couldn’t resist including a couple of queer women writers because, well... of course I couldn’t. 🌈

There are so many more women in translation I wanted to include, so this definitely won’t be my last post for Women in Translation Month.

I’ve tagged a few friends too because I can’t wait to see your picks. 🤍

Here’s to reading women from all over the world. 🌍

WHY THE NEAPOLITAN QUARTET IS ABSOLUTE MAGIC
.
.
Oh my, where to even begin. There is a level of magic in these books by Elena Ferrante, something that’s hard to put your finger on, but after you finish reading it lingers in your mind. I’ve never felt so captivated by a set of books, a cast of characters. Upon finishing the series, I wanted to try to dissect the secret sauce, what makes this series of books so impactful. This is my attempt to do that.

MARCH READING RECAP.
.
.
loved my reads this month. So many thoughts.

LAND by Maggie O’Farrell. thank you for the gifted arc @aaknopf - releasing in June. Guys, this book. Wow. Unlike anything I’ve ever read before watching the life of a family alongside the development of the land of Ireland… it’s masterful, unique, so like Maggie’s work but also different than anything she’s written before. People are going to say it’s too slow, and yes it is a slow, heavy read, but my gosh does it pay off and it changes the way I want to read in the future. Slow and engrossed in my read- this is a book that calls for that.

EAST OF EDEN by John Steinbeck. a classic for a reason, another book that begs of you to slow down and spend time in its world. Truly an epic, I fell in love with the characters and the world in which they live, the battle between good and evil, and the ending was excellent. A quick favorite, I can’t wait for more Steinbeck.

ON EARTH AS IT IS BENEATH BY Ana Paula Maia. thanks @charcopress for the gifted copy! My first from the @thebookerprizes && I LOVED. It was quick and novella- like, but felt like a thriller I couldn’t turn away from. About men living in a prison under a psychotic man who hunts the prisoners as a game in the night time, my only complaint is I wish it were longer to dive into some of the themes I know it was hinting at.

TAIWAN TRAVELOGUE by Yang Shuang-zi. My second of the @thebookerprizes and again I was surprised by the negative reviews but it got me thinking a lot about this bookstagram space and how it seems there’s such a focus on quick reads, getting in as much as possible and if a book is deemed ‘slow’ that’s automatically a bad thing… yes, this book was slow, but it was deliberate and it made me slow down in my reading and that actually feels like a positive in my eyes. I really enjoyed being lost in the world of Taiwan of decades ago, the food and the people… and the deeper purpose with talks of love and colonization coming out in the end, really excellent book.
