"Hey you are a dancer, right? So there is no need for you to exercise at all. So lucky! " I have heard almost every other person say this to me my whole life.

The most common misconception is that practicing dance is as good as exercising and that there is no need to do any form of exercise to maintain form, strength and agility.

I practice, teach and choreograph in Bharatanatya, Kathak and Contemporary dance styles. It's all the more challenging to prepare the body and mind to practice these dance forms. Externally visually each of these forms are unique with their own specialized nuances. However, the foundation is still the human body with its various body parts that need to be aligned, strengthened, stabilized, mobilized and to develop the required amount of flexibility. This is where body conditioning provides the necessary tools and guidance.

For instance to be able to do Adavus in araimandi position in Bharatanatya, the Tatkaar and hastaks in Kathak and floorwork in contemporary dance, firstly, requires the joints and muscles in the body to be able to bear the load, and develop the strength. The next step is honing the skills in any dance form through the methodical practice that is prescribed in each form. So throwing yourself into a jati, or tukada or a choreographed movement phrase without training them leads to injuries. To achieve a certain pose, or speed or fluidity in movement needs the body to be conditioned accordingly. It's almost like starting to cook a specific meal without having the right ingredients and without preparing the necessary cleaning, chopping or grinding before placing them on stove

Body conditioning, even in the most basic level is highly effective for the respective body parts to be stable, strong, supple and mobile. Once a certain degree of body awareness, alignment, strength, stability and mobility is achieved, you can always increase the intensity

i promise there’s a video transition here :)

slightly long caption ahead ⚠️

best of the best made me tear up. i had a moment and this song was stuck in my head. hence i have hopped on the trend.
it was around this time last year when i started to officially perform solos. i didn’t have a grand arangetram or rangmanch pravesh because, well, i have been performing since the age of 6 or 7 (as you can see) and it never felt necessary. but this is still a milestone because when i set out to do this full time, i was absolutely terrified.
the last two months have been a storm. with bad physical health and many work commitments, i needed to take a second to think about how much has changed.
if you asked me in 2020, where i thought i would be now, i would have had a very bleak answer. i would not be here. gosh, am i glad that has changed! the arts can really make a difference. and thankfully i have the privilege of a supportive family and one engaged in the arts!
very grateful that i get to talk about mental health through the arts. more to come. ❤️
…
also the new dance video has been taken by @photography_ashte ✨
and the old one by bill thatha. it is somewhere on youtube and no, i will not point you in it’s direction 🤓

The art of śṛṅgāra in Kathak often accompanies patience and yearning. Where there is grace, there is also joy, intention and apprehension.
