Not a lot of people get to say they had a friend like this girl. Someone who felt like a sister, but wasn’t. We were blessed to choose that kind of friendship.

Riata (Sis) was a light. She was vulnerable and strong in the dark seasons, joyful and courageous in the bright seasons, and kind, humble, and thoughtful in every season. She was the epitome of sharing God’s love. She didn’t just believe God’s word, she lived God’s word. Every. Single. Day.

From riding horses, both scared out of our minds, to riding pastures on our own. From dreaming of opening a salon together, to us brainstorming for the salon and boutique she opened. From dance, drives singing at the top of our lungs, iKylee jokes, too many clothing hauls and new outfit ideas, family struggles, getting to take her senior pictures, endless long phone calls, concerts and just about everything in between, we grew through life together. Each carving our own path, yet taking the time to be there for each other.

I pray everyone gets to know a friend like her. And those of us who did, will forever be grateful and will help her light continue to shine for years to come. There is joy in knowing she lives on in others and that she is now dancing in the clouds of heaven with her Maker and her hero, her dad.

Here she is. The dahlia I grew from seed 3 years ago from @floretflower seeds, the dahlia I’ve never been able to name. Tubers saved each year and overwintered. She comes back prettier every year, and her petals in the cooler summer days are a brilliant pink. A butterfly, bee and pollinator favorite. I’ve never quite had a name picked out that did her justice, and it only seems fitting now to give this sweet dahlia hers, Riata’s Ripple. 🩷🩷

Now even more so, I’ll look forward to seeing this beauty grow in my garden every summer from here on out, with the goal of sharing her tubers with others so that her beauty can be multiplied in the gardens of those who loved her so. #riatasripple

Riata Dawn,
There aren’t enough words I could ever write to express how grateful I was to be a part of the 19 years you spent with us. You were such a beautiful person inside and out with an infectious energy that drew everyone to you. And to think I was lucky enough to call you my best friend. You were my sister, my dad’s favorite bonus daughter, and truly a part of our family that we didn’t know was missing until you filled that void. I will forever cherish all of the memories we made together. All of the concerts we went to and sang our hearts out at. All of the thrift stores we spent hours upon hours at, spending more money than we probably should have. Our sweet treat or fun drink runs that took us to North Platte and Kearney while we were in high school and turned into Lincoln as we pursued our shared passion of cosmetology. And the countless other spur of the moment adventures that I’m so glad I said yes to. Your selflessness and love, your dedication to your family, friends, community, and even strangers, and most of all your faith will long be remembered by all the lives you touched during your short, 19 years with us. Oh how I wish you were still here with me, we had so many concerts, trips, and events planned and so many memories yet to be made. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye, we were supposed to be in each others weddings, aunts to each others future children, and were supposed to grow old and gray together. While you left me with a hole in my heart that will never quite heal, I know you are having the best reunion with your dad up in heaven, catching up on the years he missed. I promise to take any chance I get to tell people about you and the beautiful life you lived. I will see you in every sunset and think of you whenever a Cody Johnson song comes on. I love you forever and ever and I promise to live a life you’d be proud of until we meet again.

I am a registered organ donor.

Just a year ago I started the journey of 1800 hours and I’m officially done! Thank you CHD for teaching and showing me the hair world and giving me endless opportunities to better myself as a person and hairstylist!!

I can’t wait to celebrate by opening my very own salon in Kenesaw NE. coming to town very soon this fall!! My books will be open before you know it and Boots Hair Co. can’t wait to have her chair filled!!

Thank you to everyone who has supported me in Lincoln and drove many hours or just a couple of minutes down the road! Even though I did not know my final landing place for my own salon, like they say “I guess all roads lead close back to home.” I am so glad I chose this community because it is unmatched. Kenesaw you have been nothing but welcoming, supportive and excited for me, and for this I am so grateful! See you so soon Kenesaw!
