Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Fall Open art tours this past Saturday. Over the course of several hours we gained real insight, shared in meaningful conversation and connection. It was the kind of day that reminds us why seeing art in person, alongside the people who made it, is crucial. We were especially lucky to hear directly from so many of the exhibiting artists, in their own words: ◦ Gronk, Jacqueline Valenzuela, and gallery owner and photographer Craig Krull at @craigkrullgallery
◦ William T. Carson at @nuartgallery
◦ Fabiola Menchelli at @marshall.gallery
◦ Mark Mennin and Lucas Reiner at @vonlintelgallery ◦ Von Wolfe at @richardhellergallery The range of work was remarkable; truly no two shows alike. We zig-zagged through Bergamot moving from legendary LA Chicano artist Gronk’s large-scale paintings to William T. Carson’s meditations on coal and deep time, Fabiola Menchelli’s luminous camera-less color fields, and the trees, carved stone, and political satire at Von Lintel. There is nowhere else in Los Angeles where you can see this much variety, meet this many artists, and hear them speak all in a single afternoon. Special thanks to the Bergamot Tenants Association for the opportunity to share my passion for art history and collecting. @bergamotsantamonica Curious about our private art tours? 📧 Reach out anytime: hannah@hannahsloan.com @sloanprojects #HannahSloanCuratorial #BergamotStation #ArtTour #Collecting #LAArt

In his anticipated show Familiars @richardhellergallery the acclaimed British painter @vonwolfe_ brings together two image-making technologies separated by centuries, effectively collapsing time and technique upon canvases that reframe our very notion of authorship, agency and self-expression. His often unsettling hyperreal paintings begin with diffusion models, which recombine myriad fragments drawn from the vast history of visual culture according to probabilities rather than conventional compositional rules. From the near-infinite amount of images this process can produce, Von Wolfe then selects the anomalies – configurations that possess what he describes as a quiet, yet profound, immediate charge. These anomalies then become the starting point for large-scale paintings made via the painstaking techniques of the Northern Renaissance. The artist describes the resulting world presented as ‘latent realism’ – a step beyond magical realism in which everything appears recognisable, yet something absolutely fundamental has shifted into the uncanny. “Latent realism names a condition in which reality appears identical to our own but something fundamental has imperceptibly shifted and the shift is distributed across every register simultaneously. It is in the image: a woman balanced upside down on antique leather bound books, a cat tethered to an ankle by coarse hemp rope, an egret perched on a chair back like a silent judge …” Von Wolfe These strange scenes are rendered with such optical conviction that their surreal impossibility is never allowed the comfortable distance of fantasy. In fact, they almost feel like visual portals into an alternate artificially generated reality. “They share with Los Angeles a foundational commitment to the proposition that reality and appearance have never been identical, and that the gap between them is not a failure but a condition.” - Von Wolfe You can read my in-depth interview with @vonwolfe_ in full @flauntmagazine here: https://www.flaunt.com/post/von-wolfe-familiars #vonwolfe #flauntmagazine #johnpaulpryor #richardhellergallery #losangeles
