Last month, Marc Shepherd discovered three thought-to-be-lost deleted songs from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe bound in the back of a copyist manuscript in the British Library. We at Opera Picciona have made recordings with some of our favorite artists, so you can enjoy them!

“On you they’d set a coronet” is a quartet for the characters of Phyllis, Lord Tolloller, Lord Mountararat, and the Lord Chancellor. It came in the first act as part of a larger musical sequence in which the House of Peers profess their love to Phyllis, and Phyllis repeatedly rejects them.

The many spinning wheels and Wilfred Shadbolts of one Phœbe Meryll 🪡🇬🇧💂🏻‍♀️

Thrilled beyond measure to be reprising my signature role of PHŒBE MERYLL in The Yeomen of the Guard with @nygasp, October 25-26, 2025! This is my absolute favorite of the Gilbert & Sullivan canon. The clever book feels like Shakespeare, and the lush music feels like Verdi!
It’s also the only G&S opera which 1) opens with a solo (mine!!!) instead of a chorus number, and 2) has an unhappy, heart-rending ending!

I last sang Phoebe @winteroperastl in 2015!
With NYGASP, my last bow as Phoebe was in 2014 at the @gsfestival in the UK!
I debuted the role a whopping 12 years ago, in 2013 @nycitycenter! Of that performance, THE @nytimes gave me an entire sentence in its glowing review: “Amy Maude Helfer was a wry, sly, and stylish Phoebe.”
I’m so happy to sing this beautiful role in a fourth production!

Today has been a good day! and my smile says it all.

Today was my first follow up appointment with my consultant/surgeon, 13 days post op and thankfully the news is good and positive - everything is going in the right direction and with the regular exercises, icing and focus on recovery the prognosis is good and all on track 🙏🏼🤞🏼it’s now over to rehabbing at work and concentrating on the next step 👍🏼✨

…….following the good news, I was able to finally catch up with my dear friend @richardholmesbaritone who is over here from New York, for our annual summer get together, which I thought wouldn’t be possible this year, due to the circumstances but luckily we were able to meet and as always had a lovely afternoon 🫖🍰👍🏼
