A little roundup of delicious moments lately:

🍝 Homemade spinach & ricotta ravioli in a burnt butter and crispy sage sauce. the best Saturday afternoon with my little family.

Spreading the message of elephant conservation, courage and kindness to those who need it most 🐘❤️👦🏾

This week marks the start of the roll-out of the Zoya & Naru Literacy Programme! This was developed by @elephantsalive and @jacanamedia, to:
1️⃣ educate students about the importance of elephants and biodiversity
2️⃣ promote an understanding of coexistence values between humans and wildlife
3️⃣ support literacy and reading in the mother tongue

📖 The story of Zoya and Naru was translated in English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Sepedi and Xitsonga. The book tells a magical story about the interconnectedness of all species, unconditional friendship, generosity and harmonious coexistence.

👩🏾‍🏫 These photos show educator Mpho Mativandlela at @nourish_npo, where the first phase of the literacy programme is currently being taught! The educational package consists of a free copy of Zoya & Naru in the learners’ mother tongue, our new elephant comic (more about that soon!), activity books & sheets, posters and questionnaire assessments.

📚There are 11 lessons of 30min each, geared towards students between 6 and 12 years of age. During this first phase (Aug-Oct 2024), the lessons will be taught in 5 communities bordering the Kruger Park.

💰We are entirely reliant on donations to fund the development, materials, salaries, management and execution of this programme. We are extremely grateful for the kind support of various foundations, private donors and longstanding Elephants Alive supporters that made it possible for us to offer the lessons free of charge to the participating communities!

‼️Support the literacy programme by ordering your copy of Zoya & Naru via our website (link in bio). All proceeds from sales and royalties are donated to Elephants Alive’s work to turn human-elephant conflict into coexistence 👨🏾‍🌾❤️🐘

Although disappointed not to be working for #ICC any longer, I’m delighted to have received this #richieryallart painting for a wall of mine. Such a good likeness which has captured the joy I experienced whilst working in cricket.

Spreading the message of elephant conservation, courage and kindness to those who need it most 🐘❤️👦🏾

As the story of Zoya & Naru finds its way to community libraries, foster homes and schools, we cannot help but feel like this is an extra special #momentofmagic that deserves to be highlighted.

In the words of Tim Hedges, a dedicated supporter of the Zoya & Naru Project: “Yesterday was an amazing and humbling day of sharing and handing out your “Zoya and Naru” book with our community. Elaine Davie and I personally delivering all the books that the Luvo Maranti Scholarship sponsored, to the homes and institutions we had selected. The books were received with such glee and excitement, and everyone commented especially on the amazing artwork in the book. Well done to you and the whole team that launched this project and have seen it through.”

A special thank you goes out to the Luvo Maranti Scholarship and Tim Hedges, who not only generously contributed to the funding of this project, but also personally delivered the books to various foster homes, libraries and educational centres around Hermanus.

Love literature? Do you care about saving elephants? Looking for the most heart-warming book of the year? If you adored The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse, this is your holiday season must-have!

Journey through the elephant corridor in our new release, Zoya & Naru! Orphaned by elephant poachers, and lost in the African bushveld, baby elephant Zoya encounters Naru, an intrepid young boy and together they make the daunting journey to reunite Zoya with her elephant family. Beautiful illustrations and African proverbs make for a rich journey that depicts the tragic consequences of elephants’ endangerment through poaching and the destruction of their habitats.

Published in partnership with Elephants Alive, this book seeks to raise awareness on the plight of elephants and the urgency of saving them before it is too late. Caroline Montague and Richie Royal have donated all proceeds from the sale of these books to Elephants Alive.

Order your copy on jacana.co.za now and stand a chance to win a signed limited-edition print!
