Why you got charged twice.

A payment request times out, so the client retries. The first one already went through.

Send an idempotency key and store it under a unique constraint. A duplicate gets the first result back.

Write the order and its event in one transaction to an outbox table.

A relay publishes it later, so you never save the order and lose the message.

Have you ever been double charged by a checkout?

Follow for more system design in 60 seconds.
