REHEARSAL NOTES @nationaleoperaballet | 500T 16mm

Besides finding it the most beautiful format, shooting on film makes my brain work in a different way, which I love. Especially the fact that I have to think about the definitive shot, rather than having the time and space to experiment in the way I can when shooting digitally. For this film, we only had two rolls of film, so every shot had to be just right. We created a very specific and accurate shot list, calculating how many seconds we could spend on each shot. We wrote down every shot I wanted to make sure was in the film, and by the end, we had even managed to save quite some seconds on the last roll for some extra spontaneous shots. It made every frame feel intentional and considered.

After two years of doing a Masters in Artistic Research at the @filmacademie @masterfilm_amsterdam , I am looking forward to share the work that grew out of this process with you from 25–28 June at the IDFA pavilion @hetdocumentairepaviljoen in Amsterdam.

My research explored ways in which audiovisual media can engage with more-than-human worlds, spanning different scales and temporalities. As part of this process, I made a 20-minute short film called The Atom’s Tale ★彡.

Following the journey of a single atom through geological, biological, and technological realms, the film invites viewers to notice and relate to worlds beyond the human. By combining animation, documentary elements, and scripted scenes, it explores the deep-time origins of technology and the circulation of matter across systems of life and media.

As part of the programme @hetdocumentairepaviljoen , I will present the film in the cinema:
★彡 26 June, 17:00 – screening followed by a presentation offering further insights into the research and process behind the film.
★彡 28 June, 19:15 – screening alongside works by my fellow graduates.
Throughout the weekend (25–28 June), the accompanying exhibition will be on view, with the film shown on loop.

‘Rehearsal Notes’

After spending time with the dancers of the National Opera & Ballet during rehearsals, I became fascinated by the moments in between.

The repetition, the waiting, the focus, and the personalities that reveal themselves behind the precision.
