“Got a Maschinehead, it’s better than the rest.”

Who knew this little black box with 16 pads would take me where it has?

When I first got into Hip Hop, I always said I was going to make it. I knew I wanted to be successful, but I don’t think I could have imagined the opportunities, accomplishments, places I’d go, or the people I’d meet along the way.

When I was getting started, I knew I wanted a beat machine like the producers I looked up to. I grabbed a used MPC 1000, but the pads weren’t working properly. At the time, replacement parts were hard to find where I was.

Then, almost by fate, Native Instruments dropped the Maschine MK1.

I was already a big Mac user, and the combination of the hardware controller and software DAW felt like the perfect setup for me.

I’ve been using the Maschine since around 2009/2010. I think I’m on my fourth MK1 at this point. Pads wore out, things stopped working, and eventually they had to be replaced.

I still have all the old ones sitting at home. Relics you’ll likely find in a museum one day.

Funny how something that started as a tool became such a huge part of my life.

From a little black box with 16 pads to records, albums, stages, tours, awards, collaborations and opportunities I never could have predicted.

I guess I really am a Maschinehead.

Me and Tobias would like to thank everyone for attending our last Lovedance party. I know I work there but we also thank the wonderful staff at the Diver for making everyone feel accepted and for helping set up and tear down!!! Looking forward to the next event when we get around to it.

Very special thanks to my longtime friend @ricksimslive for the wonderful photos. Follow him and check out his photo profile for more pics documenting the London scene !!!

Reflections.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. I’ve done a lot, but I still feel like I haven’t done enough. It’s a constant battle as a creative, especially in today’s online age where creativity is often judged more on quantity than quality. Where output needs to be constant, attention spans are short, and the input is noise from every direction.

I’ve been trying new tactics to separate myself from the pack. I’ve been making a lot of music, not to mention all the new music in the vault, which is honestly some of the best work I’ve made. I’ve been doing the things. I’ve been trusting the process.

But is it enough?

I create because I have to. I’ve always had to. Whether it was art, drawing, skateboarding, snowboarding, photography, or videography.

As I type this, I’m sitting behind a desk in front of a computer at my 9–5, feeling like I’m wasting my potential. Ironically, “doesn’t work to his potential” was something written on a lot of my report cards growing up.

Part of me feels like this can’t be it. That I was meant for something bigger than routine and survival. But then another part of me wonders if that sense of purpose is just an illusion creatives tell themselves to keep going.

Still… I keep going.

Because even through the doubt, the exhaustion, the rejection, and the uncertainty, creating is one of the only things that has ever made me feel fully connected to myself.

So maybe that’s just it, maybe that’s the answer …
