VELDT from our perspective - photo @holddmayo Late 1986 19years old …at @falloutshelterraleigh with @peele1 and recent ex bass player now magaman Joe Boyle Nc we played fallout shelter developing our sound parts #gangiffour #cocteautwins #bauhaus which would expand to the local college scene and eventually chapel hill, and surrounding areas of the local triangle music scene which was rich with up and coming bands like @connells superchunk @polvo @whatpeggywants egg, @dexterwomwebber @corrosion_of_conformity . The fallout shelter was a place where There could be preps, or people dressed in their best goth outfits. Punks, LGBTQIA+, old people and young. Everyone felt safe there,.
That, perhaps, is why even three decades later people hold such fondness for The Fallout Shelter.

“You could be a little bit of a misfit – because you’re surrounded by other people, who may not be the same kind of misfit you are, but they are a misfit in their own way, and most of our friends would go there for industrial music nights and especially goth nights so it was easy to discover new music and be inspired,it was a haven for all things alternative..#alternativemusic #gothnightindustrialmusic falloutshelerraleighnc

Someone recently asked me how we felt about being left out of current shoegaze lists well, we’ve been there from the beginning, played with many of the artists people now consider the foundation of shoegaze, and helped shape that era. But history isn’t always written equally. Sometimes certain stories get amplified while others get overlooked. As Black musicians working in a scene that wasn’t ever associated with Black artists, we’ve experienced that firsthand. You see, from my experience as a black artist if you have a vision and don’t comply you’re considered difficult but if you’re white your considered a genius or as they say (troubled)** but At this point, though, I’m less interested in arguing for a place in someone else’s list and more interested in continuing to make music and connect with people who understand what we’ve contributed.”
 personally,
“After decades of this, I don’t have a lot of energy left for explaining why we’re overlooked. Racism isn’t always someone standing in front of you saying ‘no’—sometimes it’s simply being left out of the conversation while others doing similar things are celebrated. I’ve made peace with the fact that our work speaks for itself. I’d rather spend my time creating than convincing people we were there.”
The irony is that many younger fans discovering shoegaze today are now finding bands like The Veldt and realizing the history is bigger and more diverse than the standard narrative suggests. Your influence exists whether every list acknowledges it or not. Having been on tour recently with @chameleonvox and @chameleonsbandofficial I’ve seen the beauty and diversity of people and how music brings people together and I wouldn’t trade it for anything, as we proceed, we know what we are up against in this current state of our country, unfortunately seems like just another day at the office, but with social media,…but let me tell you we don’t intend to fail✊🏽🙏🏽‼️ photo: @djinncarllewis #shoegaze #dreampop #soulgaze #soulgaze #ukstreetsoul
